East 40 Food & Drink
East 40 Food & Drink was opened in May of 1975 by Ed and Joan Conlin, who are responsible for the design and most of the collectibles you see here today. The antiques, pictures and fireplaces have been collected from travels throughout Europe and the United States. The bar is from and old saloon in Montana, the chandelier is from Spain and the stained glass windows are from an old Methodist Church in Bismarck. Starting in 1979, Caspar and Matina Borggreve operated the East 40 for over 20 years and continued the fine dining tradition, while becoming Bismarck's premier restaurant. Ed and Joan Conlin continue to own the East 40 today.
The atmosphere of the place can't be denied. Quirky, cozy nooks for dining and an abundance of charm in the decor. However, the service was beyond slow and the waitress could never be found. We ran out of water, drinks, bread and patience as we waited almost 2 hours for our food. The food finally arrived and was overall mediocre. I had ordered an expensive pork dish and was horrified that it arrived seared on the outside and raw in the center. It took 15 minutes to locate the waitress. I pointed out the raw nature of my pork and she took it back to the kitchen. she returned moments later and informed me that the pork was indeed cooked corectly at mid-rare. I explained that I would never eat raw pork and that I wanted it cooked. 30 min. later my dinner arrived again. The pork was now done, but the new potato casserol was ice cold. We could not locate the server. Finally the bills arrived. She had taken one soda off my dinner for my trouble. When leaving another diner and myself asked to speak to the manager. HA. No apology, No nothing. He acted like he did not care about the length of time out dinner took to arrive, and he certainly did not care about the problems with the food. I will never go back. I advise you to do the same.
