I recently moved to Rapid City from a large urban metropolis, not expecting to find the quality and panache within the local restaurant scene. My ignorance was quite welcome as I have sampled the fare at Delmonicos, Enigma, the Corn Exchange and a few others in town, but none provide the gastronomic pleasures that Tally's has given to me.
I have heard that I arrived at a great time as the menu and chef are quite new and together have combined for a true dining experience.
The diner type ambience adds to a sense of comfort instead of detracting from the feel of fine-dining by giving an intimate setting without being overly romantic.
I have dined here several times for lunch and once for dinner. The salad offerings range from typical house to amazingly developed with options that include fois gras, imported cheeses and exotic mushrooms. Dinner entrees and lunch offerings also range from that appealing to a more cautious diner to that of the gourmand.
The wine list provides a sufficient number of well priced options, both domestic and international with several options by the glass.
I am glad to have Tally's as a restaurant option and wish them all the success in the world.
July 20, 2010 update: After having written this review, I have since returned several times and been rather disappointed. The service is still friendly, but the kitchen can't seem to get the food out in a timely manner. I have stopped eating here during my lunch hour as there isn't enough time and the last two dinners here likewise took way too long. I hope management can turn things around, but until I hear that they have done so, I will return to the other fine food establishments in town.
