Babani's Kurdish Restaurant
Babani's claims to be the first authentic Kurdish restaurant in the United States. The unfamiliar menu items may keep some away, but once you try it, you will definitely come back. The richly aromatic cuisine is prepared using fresh vegetables and organic herbs and spices. The Kurdish chicken soup, dowjic and tabbouleh are nicely complimented by naska nan wa paneer , an addicting, delicious house-baked bread. For those looking for a taste bud-tingling entree, don't miss the kubay sawar , ground beef stuffed in fried wheat dumplings, or chicken tawa, chicken layered with potato, green pepper, onion and dried lemon. Prices are reasonable and portions are enormous.
Babani's Restuarant is one of the best restaurants in Downtown St. Paul. The food is delicious, the portions are perfect and the staff is attentive. The Tanyata Salad is my favorite, with Kurdish bread as a side.
I went to Babani's for lunch and was dissappointed. I had the Chicken Tawa, which turned out to be mostly fat and bone.
There was one server for the whole Restaurant. He was not attentive and somewhat rude. When I voiced my displeasure wth my meal, he was indifferent.
I will not be returning to Babani.
Babani's is one of the most surprising restaurants in the Cities. Nearly everything on the menu has a wonderful taste sensation unlike that of any other cuisine. The dowjic soup, which includes chicken, rice, yogurt, basil, and lemon, is absolutely not to be missed. One beverage on the menu, called mastaw, is made from yogurt, water, and dill. Though it may be strange to the palate, it truly is a perfect complement to the food. Every time I visit, I wonder why I don't stop in more often.
