We ate at Ursala's last night. It was overall a good experience and great food. For those of you who want a heaping portion of Lasangne or a big plate of Nacho's this is not the place for you, and please do not try to squeeze your way into the restaurant thinking you will get a 2 for $20 deal. That said, Ursala's is meant for a foodie crowd, a nice romantic dinner, or a first class glass of wine. Try the Stephen Vincent Cab for a mellow taste and a quick unwind.
We got the cheese plate to start with a basic Reisling which was crisp and light. The cheese plate actually was fairly large with cashews and apricots and a nice not-to-sharp local blue cheese. After the cheese, the soup and salad came. These were perfect. The red pepper goat cheese combo was excellent, and the grilled romaine with blue cheese dressing was perfectly executed. My wife has promissed to grill all the salad at home now:) I cannot say enough about the soup and salad course. For the entree my wife had the NY Strip, which was cooked okay, and I had the tenderloin which I recommend over the steak. The jerk-spiced bacon-wrapped flavor is excellent, but it is not a carribean taste; more of a middle eastern flavor which I did not expect but thouroughly enjoyed. As we had to get over to the theater we didn't have time for a dessert wine or a dessert at all, but they looked pretty simply as some others passed our table. the chef came out and asked how our food was, but I'm not a big fan of that. I believe a chef should stay in his kitchen unless requested to be seen by the diner. It looks too much like pandering the other way. The check for the meal for two was under $100, which for a three-course meal was a good value.
This restaurant is for the casually elegant and educated set, it is not trendy per se, but in downtown White Bear a truly trendy place would not make it. This restaurant should gove diner another option besides Acqua.
I ate at Ursula's this past week and got desperately ill, and I think it was the shell fish; although, considering my biological symptoms, it also could have been soap left on my water glass. The service was great, though. Make sure you ask to see the genuine stuffed panda bear they keep in the kitchen.
In the past year we have dined at Ursula's half a dozen times. The food is always delicious and the wine list is excellent; we are never disappointed. The fish is perfectly cooked, the frisee salad with lardons and a poached quail egg is a treat, and you must try the pork tenderloin...melt in you mouth tender! Did I mention the steaks???
