My wife and I had dinner here on our honeymoon in 1964, we have returned every two or three years since then, to touch base with those memories. Over the years we were disappointed to see it slowly go downhill.
We were there this spring (2011) and I'm happy to say that there has been a tremendous change. We found the atmosphere to be very friendly, the service was excellent and the food is delicious. The prices were very reasonable also. We'll be returning more often now.
The Platter is no longer owned by Dave Zeis. It is now owned and operated by Tim Walworth. Dinner Service starts at 5pm, and the bar opens at 4pm. They have a fully changed menu, and the reviews have become great. Please come check out more info on The Platter on Facebook.
We went to The Platter as we were driving around Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota looking for the old supper clubs. We loved it! The food was excellent, and the bartender made a pretty good Old Fashioned. I had the classic braised pork shank that was sumptuous and fell off the bone; my husband had the maple planked whitefish. Wow! This place is 1950s small town friendly. Almost everyone knew each other, and the fact that we were out-of-towners who love traveling to favorite spots around Lake Superior became a topic for discussion. Don't go if you're in a hurry. Go, kick back, soak in the atmosphere, and just enjoy yourself.
Only 4 stars because the owner needs to hire more staff. Our waitress, who was charming and fun, was the only one working the floor, and she was kicking butt.
Well my dad David has owned the place since 1999 and since we made a lot of improvements. The Bay Room is very nice, with new carpet and wallpaper. The food is great. My dad is wonderful chef. The bar has a wide variety of drinks. The New Years celebration we have is worth making reservations to. Check it Out.
In my opinion, Zeis' Platter on Turner Rd., in Ashland, Wisconsin is a very fine dining establishment. The interior is elegant and the setting is extremely romantic. The food is exceptional and reasonably priced. The filet mignon is the best I've had in any restaurant in the United States. Dave Zeis is a wonderful chef who is without a doubt gifted in his culinary skills.
The Platter has an interesting history, originally a brothel and gambling parlor. However, some investment into the restaurant needs to be done. The chairs were old and uncomfortable. Drinks at the bar were weak at best.
The food was marginal. Brown edges on the salad, white fish had a terrible fishy taste. Potatoes and dessert were highlights. Overpriced for the quality given. Really wouldn't recommend for dinner, but have a soft drink at the bar and get the feel of the place.
