Everyione is friendly and have met many of the locals that eat there (not just tourists).
It is located in the middle of town, and easy access for the shops, or festival events.
It is one of the few places that will take a reservation for one night.
I've been stopping by the place for years and have tried nearly every food and wine on the menu and never disappointed.
I've also stayed in most every room.....from a small room with one bed & dresser to a large studio room with kitchen, cable, a/c and big enough for friends or a family.
Bayfield is big on hiking & backpacking & sailing & kayaking to the Apostle Islands.
From the mishmash of garage sale linens and towels to the shower black with mold and mildew, Greunke's should be avoided at all costs. Additionally, the proprietor refused to honor her posted rates, and we had to pay an additional $20 per night. But it's the filth that will keep us from coming back...the private bath in our room was positively repugnant.
The menu was NOT creative at all, very meat and
potatoes, Go to Maggie's, Much better food,
I did however like the atmosphere at Gruenke's.
Nice old building with allot of cool old photos.
The wait staff was nice and efficient.
Prices high, quality, forgettable.
While the building is an old inn, the rooms are on the 2nd floor, with a pizza take-out place on the first floor. I couldn't believe it? We went, expecting Victorian age accomodations and were very, very disappointed. During the hours of operation, the smells of pizza wafted upstairs to our room. Ycch! Also, the front door of the building was open during the pizza place's hours of operation. I felt that there was a serious lack of security, and flies entered the building.
When we arrived in Bayfield we had no idea where to stay, this was our first time there. Greunke's had the only rooms available in town, lucky for us. The staff is great, From the start they make you feel welcome and make you feel as though they have known you for years. We were even told of hauntings in the inn. The rooms were also very nice and comfortable. My only complaint with the rooms would be the water pressure in the shower, kinda comes and goes. The restaurant has a great menu and the food was wonderful. We cannot wait to go back for another visit.
