The Freight House Restaurant
The Freight House Restaurant is acoeA must visit when in La Crosse.ac This National Historic Site was originally constructed in 1880 as the Milwaukee Road Freight House. Keeping the history and railroad theme intact, it was renovated in 1978 and is the areaac2s premier steak and seafood restaurant. Youac2ll enjoy the friendly staff and warm ambiance with itsac2 grand timbers and lofty spaces of the main dining room and bar. Three other dining rooms are complemented with antique bars and fireplaces. The menu ranges from slow roasted Prime Rib, selections of naturally aged Prime Beef charbroiled to your order, to Chicken and Steak Teriyaki, Seafood, Fresh Fish and a plentiful Vegetarian Platter. Seasonal vegetables are offered throughout the year and all meals are complemented by an appetizing salad bar. The extensive wine list features domestic and imported wines and offers many by the glass. The bar is one of a kind with its impressive back wall filled with hundreds of liquors available, a large fireplace, and a relaxed atmosphere. Friday and Saturday nights offer a bonus with some of the regionac2s finest musicians appearing.
Over priced for what you get. Very dark. Hard to see the food you are eating. I believe that it is only in business because it is known as one of the best places to eat, which it is not. It may be one place in the area that you can go for supper dressed in something more than jeans and a ball cap.
If you are looking to go out for a meal that will knock your socks off travel to the River View Inn, Northbend WI (well worth the drive) or Schmidty's on La Crosse's south side. Better quality of meat, larger salad bar with more choices, a more inviting atmosphere and you will leave with more money in your checkbook.
My wife and I go 2x a year, we each have the same thing each time we're there. I have the Prime Rib and my wife has the Alaskan King Crab. Always outstanding. It IS pricey, but we consider this place a treat for those special times.....Good drinks and nice wine selection.
My wife and I traveled there from Harmony Minnesota to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary. We were completely satisfied and highly recommend this fine dining establishment My wife had the prime rib and it was all it has been ballyhooed for. My swordfish was done to perfection. The salad bar was great, side dishes perfect, and the drinks were excellent. The wine list is extensive. Service was wonderful. All the naysayers are wrong wrong wrong!
If you've ever had the desire for the most delicious, mouth-watering ribeye in your life...this is the place to go...quietly nestled along the banks of the Mighty Mississppi...this is one stop I ALWAYS make when I'm in town. These ribeyes are HUGE...be warned...do NOT eat/snack on anything before you go to The Freighthouse...you just gotta be here in person to believe it!
Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Always a delight to dine here. A little on the expensive side (approximately $80 for two people), but well worth every penny. I would suggest making reservations due to the popularity of the restaurant. Approximate waiting time without reservations is 45 minutes.
