To die for! I'm an annual business traveler to the wonderful city of La Crosse and look forward to dinner at Kate's on State every year. From the very beginning of the meal your tastebuds will thank you. Bread and variety of dipping sauces/butters are subtle but good. The salad is as fresh as they come and the dressings..yummy. Most recently I tried the crabcakes over roasted red pepper penne creamy pasta. AWESOME. Most menu items are around the $20 range, but believe me it's well worth it. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed.
I'm a part of a local traveling dinner group, and we've been to every local restaurant in a 100 mile radius. I've also been fortunate enough to have lived in 15 states, and to have sampled cuisine in all of them. But when it comes to this area, my three favorite meals have all been experienced at Kate's - I'm a fan of the entire experience, and have yet to discover a weakness. Its sort of a well kept secret as well, as many in town remember the restaurant as a deli (which it isn't anymore). Even the starter salad is unique - bountiful and delicious (dill dressing and the mozarella ball included). I enjoyed the wine selection. The atmosphere is quaint and homelike, and the lighting makes it quite romantic. The restaurant's small size and the atmosphere keeps the noise down. I think the last time I visited Kate's I had the Filet Minon with lobster stuffed ravioli smothered in a cream sauce - this of course followed by dessert and coffee (I believe we arrived at 6:30 and left at 11:00pm). By all means, do yourself a favor and visit this fine little restaurant, and see for yourself what a gem her little restaurant is-
I ate at Kate's June 19th with two friends. Atmosphere was pleasant and comfortable, waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. Meal was disappointing as the cooking was not true Italian. The recipes have been changed to suit the taste challenged people of Lacrosse WI. Anchovies have been removed from the dishes as locals find them distasteful. I was told by the waiter, when asking about several items on menu that they would not be what I was expecting. In other words all items on menu were Kate's version of the dish, not the standard usual Italian version. I found this very disappointing as I'm very fond of Italian cooking. Had I been alone I would have left.
Kates on State is fabulous, by far my favorite place to dine at in La Crosse. The food can be pricey, but it is 100% worth it. There is no other place that has the ingenuity that this little restaurant has. I also like how quaint it is, it's romantic, quite and cozy. Definitely not children friendly, in fact that is one of the first signs you read when you walk in. I don't know how the chefs do what they do, but I love it, if I had an unlimited income, I would dine there everyday. On average the cost of a plate of food runs from about 17 to 30 dollars. No Italian food compares.
If i ever get really really angry and end up killing someone and i'm about to be put in the electric chair.
I want Kates crab cakes to be my last meal, followed by her tirumisu
i think i am going to kill someone right now because i need to speed up the proccess of getting a forkload of the sweet crab cake and spicey sauce combo into my mouth and it taste so good.
Maybe some of the best Italy food Ive had in my life. Italy may be the only place that has better Italian food.....seriously......and Ive dined at them all from Chicago, to LA, to New York City, to Philly and everywhere in between....... Im also very crtitical of food, especially Italian (since most of it is a waste of money especially compared to my homemade vodka and tomato sauce) Went camping in LaCrosse and we stumbled acroos this restaurant. It was amazing. Best Italian Food Ive had in years if ever. Even simple dishes had tons of aroma and flavor. 5 Stars for sure.
Wonderful!!! The gorgonzola sauce is wonderful, the gnocchi is to die for, the risoto is creamy and the taste melts in your mouth...everything I've ever tried there has been an experience for my taste buds! If you like italian and are in the area you have to stop! Kate's salad (the dinner salad you get with your meal) is incredible. Colorful and tasty and hearty with fresh mozzarella, pomagranite, fresh greens...wonderful. THANK YOU KATE!
Many might think Kate's On State is just a little deli, but in fact it's a fine Italian restaurant. This excellent restaurant used to serve lunch and the sign outside still says they serve lunch, but it is only now open for dinner now. which is just fine with me because they excel in the quality and authenticity of their food. I am originally from Los Angeles and in such a big city, your food absolutely has to be topnotch to do well. I do consider myself to be a food snob and this restaurant is at the list of my top 2 in La Crosse. You can tell this restaurant is fabulous just by the salad they serve you. My husband, who HATES salads, loves their starter salad, you have to try their dill ranch dressing. My husband's favorite dish is the gnocchi, which is pasta made out of potato flour and comes in a rich creamy gorgonzola sauce. My favorite is their Wild Mushroom Ravioli...OH MY GOD. If anyone out there is uneasy about seafood because they have had a dish with a fishy taste, fear not, this restaurant only serves the freshest seafood and will not dissapoint. This is a definate must on the list for food lovers, reservations are recommended. Plates typically run from $13.99 - $26.99.....WORTH EVERY PENNY.
