Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant, Sister Bay

I heard about this restaurant's stance on eliminating the Washington Island goats. As the previous reviewer mentioned, what a jerk! I've driven by this place a few hundred times over the past 20 years. And my family and I have often stopped for a bite to eat on the way up to the island. But from this point on, that stops. We will never, EVER frequent this lowlife establishment again! We were wondering what happened to the goats this summer. Now we know. Thanks to that, you've lost our business - and the business of anyone else I can persuade as well. I hope Al Johnson's goes out of business.

I ate there once. And the food was fine. And the waitresses were very busty - which they showed off in their outfits. However, the reason for my low grade is because of their business practice. As everyone knows, the biggest attraction for this place is the existence of a few goats living on the grass roof of the restaurant. It's a tourist hot spot. Well, 20 miles to the north, on Washington Island, the general store there used to have some pet goats the kept in a pen outside. Their pen also had a plank which allowed the goats to climb on the roof of a very small chalet. Well, the owner of Al Johnson's Restaurant filed a patent on having goats on the roof. And he had his attorney immediately send a cease-and-desist order to the store on Washington Island, saying they couldn't have their goats anymore. Are you kidding me???? No, I'm not joking. Those Washington Island goats had absolutely nothing to do with Al Johnson's, nor did they impact his business in any way shape or form. But now the goats are gone. My young daughters love going up to Washington Island every summer. And one of the highlights of their trips was feeding those goats. And now they can never do that again. Thank you Al Johnson! Mr. Al Johnson (or whoever the owner is) YOU ARE A JERK! And I for one will never frequent your establishment again.

Al Johnson's is a local institution in Door County and no visit is complete without stopping in at least once for Swedish Pancakes. Kids and adults find it a relaxed family atmosphere. Kids LOVE it! And parents and grandparents do too because if the kids are happy it is easy to be happy. The waitresses are friendly, prompt and give the kids and adults lots of attention. The menu other than pancakes is good, but certainly not gourmet. So go for the swedish pancakes and hot chocolate, or their soup and sandwiches. Enjoy a casual and pleasant meal in a unique Door County location with a waterfront view.

Adorably decorated and unique in having goats graze on the grass roof. My family enjoyed the food and the service. We were brought out a plate of different Swedish crackers which was interesting. We didn't wait long at all for our food and it was nice to have such a sweet waitress. I love the Swedish style uniforms and hair as well. I also appreciated having the table ready for us with a high chair waiting. When a place is baby friendly, it makes it even better. Thank you for the great memory!

A great dining experience! On one of the busiest days of the year I was able to get seated fast with my family of 5. I felt taken care of by the staff. Our food came quick. The theme was amusing and the waitress was very nice. Great dining experience!!

A fun place to eat and visit. Everyone, especially kids, will enjoy seeing the goats graze on the roof. The meatballs and Swedish pancakes are very good. The attached shop has an extensive inventory of interesting items from Sweden.

Al Johnson's is by FAR the best restaurant in Door County. The authentic Swedish food is fantastic. Try the Pytt i Panna... it's to die for. The atmosphere is awesome! The roof is covered with grass and during the summer months goats can be seen up there. There's also a cool giftshop in the front. The long wait is worth it for the fantastic food, the great service and the all-around cool atmosphere. If you're visiting The Door, this place is a must-stop. Just be prepared to wait, for sometimes up to an hour. A+
