Restaurant Magnus closed 1/1/11. No other suggestion except that if you're out of luck.

One of the best meals I have had in a long time!! I was impressed that they had multiple types of raw oysters for us to try, though that detail is not on the menu. The duck is AMAZING! I don’t normally like cauliflower, but this side must have been cooked in duck fat because it was delicious. The salmon dish was also great. The wait staff is nice, prompt, and professional. My only dilemma was that my dessert was huge. I got the ice cream sandwich (nutmeg ice cream between two large brown sugar cookies); it was delicious but way too big. Maybe I missed the note, but the menu should say that the desserts can be shared. My guest and I were able to eat outside; the inside seemed way too loud (although there was a wedding party going on). I will definitely return here during my next trip to Madison – what a great find!

Okay, this place has changed since the two posts below. First, no more South American, this is now 'new' Scandinavian. The chef was nominated for a Beard Foundation award this spring, for good reason. The food is exceptional, albeit, somewhat quixotic. Be ready for some different preparation methods, meticulously done, and worth the price ($20-30)! The boar tenderloin is a good meal for the not overly adventurous and the scallops/calamari has never disappointed. My favorite is the venison. Great small plates (salt blocks!) for the raw eaters too.

To sum this restaurant up in one word, YUM! We started with the Jarlsberg tart and it was a great way to start, very delicious. The Ahi tuna and mussels were divine. Looking at the menu some of the pairing seem somewhat odd, but they really come together well. The potato dumplings and muesli truffle risotto was a true delight. The wine list was complete and the service is attentive without being intrusive. We will be back!

Good upscale restaurant

Magnus is pricey but the food is great. Every time we've been there, the service had been just right - prompt enough, friendly, and not too cloying. For a nice occassion, give them a try.

Love this restaurant
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Madison. Not only is the food exceptional, but the service and ambiance as well. The prices are extremely reasonable for the high quality of food and great waitservice you receive.

2nd Date Venue

Magnus is a very stylish restaurant and lounge located in beautiful downtown madison, 3 blocks from the Capitol. Menu choices are updated seasonally and never dissapoint. This restaurant is my favorite for many reasons. The portions are generous and world class, unique salads, soups and breads begin your meal. Magnus easily serves the finest cuts of South American meats, especially their Diablo Fillet, Elk and amazing cut of Lamb. The drinks are top notch and are worldly. In addition several rare cognac's and tequila's are offered to discriminating patrons. The ambience is amazing with deep textures and gold tones filling the dining room and a darker, more serious tone fills the lounge. Magnus also has a banquet room for rent in case you wanted to have a birthday or wedding there. The waitstaff is well trained and clean kempt as well as possesing the unique ability to remember many of their customers names and therefor making you feel like you are welcomed and at home. Because of the combination of style, great food, great service, location and fantastic drinks, Magnus has become my favorite place to bring a date for a more personal evening. BTW, the owners regularly frequent the establishment and are happy to make smal talk or ask how your experience was and welcome you back! Live music in the lounge at least once a week tops the Magnus cake and sets Magnus apart as a real gem in the Madison dining community. Three thumbs up!!!!!!!!!!!
