I would give the food 5 stars. Had a great dinner there on Friday night followed by a fabulous omelette on Sunday. The reason I can't give it 5 stars is the lack of cleanliness. We had dirty spider webs by our booth. Both bathrooms were in need of serious cleaning. No improvement on Sunday so I conclude that the bathroom is not cleaned on a regular basis. This is unfortunate since I can rave about the food but if the public areas are not clean, I wonder how clean the kitchen is!
Waves looks like a typical bar from the street but it is anything but when you enter. There is a large bar along the east wall with tables on the north and down the center. The chef-owner, Steve has a vast experience in cooking and oversees a very small kitchen that produces outstanding food. He makes all sauces, desserts and he bakes the bread. He buys good quality food and knows how to turn it into outstanding meals. I have eaten there many, many times and never had a bad meal. Never had to send anything back. This place is equal to most high end Milwaukee restaurants and better then most Chicago eateries with Racine prices. Fresh fish offered daily for dinner and lots of other items to select if you don't want seafood. All cooked to order and well plated and served by friendly staff. Lunch is offered daily except Monday when they are closed. A good sized lunch menu is offered along with daily lunch specials. Try the steak salad for lunch, served with homemade dressing. Desserts are homemade too and change often. A great place.
Great place, fun, excellent food, everyone is very friendly. I started out with a drink at the bar, waiting for our table, but ended up eating at the bar because we were having such a great time talking with a couple we had just met. Gotta give this place a try, you won't be sorry.
I entered the restaurant after my brief visit to the festival site. I though it'd simply be a little establishment, mainly bar oriented with deep fried bar food, but when I entered it seemed much bigger and whilst it had a bar, the tables were more than the run of the mill plain oak tableclothless bar tables used so frequently. A beautiful dark blue table cloth was placed on the table that with the atmosphere was absolutely easy on the eyes. The light was dimmed and each table had its own candle that when lit it projected the image of a ship on the wall. When I sat down, I was attended to almost immediatly and being only in the mood for certain types of food I though that I wouldn't eat much because I'm not too fond of sea food. But to my surprise there was much more than the average deep fried walleye. There were things I recognized from restaurants I would make dinner reservations to a week in advance. In the end the price turned out to be much cheaper than you would have to pay else where. I had a chat with the chef: Steve Matson. He and his brother Mike Matson opened it about 2 years ago, and are looking into opening other establishments.
Pros: Good food, Good location, Great people, and very satisfactory as far as the service goes. Good for big groups. Good selection of wine, beer, and a few creations that the bartenders have thought up. The chef and cooks are always thinking of new things that usually taste better then they sound but it is interesting to see what people who like their jobs try to do to make the whole place better.
Cons: A small front is easy to pass by if your not looking for it specifically, Not a good place to go for a quiet rendevous. Closed mondays ( I always eat out on mondays.), Limited seating (only about 40 or so people), being too close to the bar for non-smokers can ruin the eating experience (although just about everyone who is at the bar smokes, the venthilation system is very good.).
Overall Rating: 8 out of 10
I thought the food was the highlight of the Waves experience. The people were very interesting and complimented the whole place.I tell friends about this place all the time. Enjoyable and easy to relax.
