Champion Chicken has grown, but never changed from its original credo of providing good freshly-made food at fair prices. That was the original goal of brothers Edward and Richard Seebach back in 1959 when they began operating out of a tiny storefront on 84th street, just north of Lisbon Avenue. The name was suggested by their father who pointed out it would come first in the telephone book at the time. Back then you could get a great chicken dinner at Champion Chicken for only $1.35, but you couldn't eat it there. Food was for carryout and delivery only. At that time it was a small operation. Richard answered the phone and did the cooking, and Ed delivered the food.
I hate to say this because I love to support the local guys over anyone else, but the service was again pretty bad. I've been to this place several times since I moved into the neighborhood, and every time I show up, the guy at the counter is kind of a jerk. He never makes me feel like he even wants my business. Like he has something better to do than gain business. Its frustrating. Who ever this guy is, he has a negative effect on the whole place. They should get rid of him and lighten up the mood. The chicken is so-so.
Went there 4/15/2011 for a fish fry. I saw that you could exchange fries for potato pancakes, so I thought I'd do it. We got our fish and is was just luke warm. The potato pancakes were luke warm too and greasy. You know these had been sitting around for awhile. The waitress took the potato pancakes back because of these reasons. What does she do? She warms them up in a microwave and brings them back to me. I couldn't believe it! It cost us $28.00 for garbage. About the only thing good there lately is there frozen custard desserts...we will not go back!
Champion Chicken, an extremely popular restaurant to those in the neighborhood, is often overlooked by others because of it's name. They have a varied menu with entrees to suit every taste, extremely high quality food and prices that should put them out of business! Their specialty is their broasted chicken but they offer everything from sandwiches, excellent pizza and ribs to great spinach salads, baked fish and the best frozen custard around. You won't be disappointed. TRUST ME! We've been eating there for 30 years.
