Historic Turner Restaurant

Description

The historic Turner Restaurant, open since 1883, is famous for its hearty American and German favorites, but mostly for its popular Friday night fish fry. Friday night fish fries are a cherished Milwaukee tradition. This tradition is a reflection of the city's Catholic history. Those who observe lent do not eat meat on Fridays during the period of lent, so fish became a popular go-to Friday-night dish. You can order your meal with Cod, perch, or both. Save room for a warm apple strudel.

I will try a 2nd time eventually but for now.....
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/15/10
6/2010 Well, I can't say that I'm disappointed (everyone says this place is a must try) but man, the fish fry was dead-nuts average. It was overpriced for starters but the portion was large. However, if it tastes average, do you really want a large portion? We went around 5ish and then took in an Admirals game (that was great though). We waited quite a while for our food and it wasn't really worth it. However, my companion had the balsamic chicken and she liked it and I thought it was OK. I will return to try something else thought. This place wasn't so unappealing that it doesn't deserve a return visit. Other things on the menu seemed enticing. Cons--Don't have any at this time besides a bit pricey Pros--Location to a good nightlife, Menu

I had a great experience when I went with a group last year after a show at the Bradley Center, so we decided to do it all over again this year. We planned ahead and made reservations this time, as last year there was over an hour wait before we were ever seated. Well, they lost our reservation so we ended up having to wait anyway. The food was good, but the portion sizes for their specialty items were extremely small. $13 for 6 (small) raviolis is pretty steep, and it didn't even fill me up. So I ordered a slice of cheese cake for dessert. A sliver costs $6. They didn't have a blender to make frozen beverages and the temperature in the restaurant was very uncomfortably hot (just as it was last year). I felt bad for the wait staff (who, by the way, were wonderful). Next year we will be taking our dinner party elsewhere.

Every visit to Milwaukee
By audrey, 9/19/05
When my husband and I go to Milwaukee for any reason we always make it a point to have either lunch or dinner at Turners. The staff is always friendly and the food is excellent. I am the kind of person who will not eat in a restaurant if I think it is dirty so I always check out the restrooms. Great way to judge the cleanliness of any place. I don't check Turner any longer. Don't feel the need to. They have always been great.

You simply are not a Milwaukeean unless you visit
By Jill FlorenceL, 8/24/05
I like the potato pancakes and the ambiance is soooo utterly early Milwaukee German through and through. You feel like you are stepping into history. Do visit the ballroom, if it's open.
