Really disappointed in service both times I stopped. I just moved to the area and was excited to find a George Webb's. I have an hour for lunch, and almost didn't make it. I noticed others that came in after me got served before. I love Webb's and will continue to go when I am in Milwaukee, but not at this one.
George Webb restaurants are known in these parts. The menu here in Port Washington is pure G.W.'s, but the whole attitude is not. That's good and that's bad.
The good ~ the waitresses are often friendly, but sometimes grumpy. That's what George Webb's has always had. The food is greasy diner food (believe it or not that is a good thing) that is always freshly made. There are homemade style pies and cakes. The breakfast is always good. Not great, but always good.
The bad is that George Webb's never closes. This place opens when it wants to and closes way too early for a place that was meant to be 24 hours. The atmosphere seems caught between a true greasy spoon (what Webb's was always known for ~ again, that's a good thing) and a family style restaurant. The ambiance is not really there.
When it gets busy, you can forget about service. I saw regulars (figured that out by the waitress knowing the folks by name) who came in after us and were waited on and served before us. The tables were bused but not cleaned when I sat down. The time it can take to get your meal is minutes on a good day to over a half hour on a bad day. That's way too long! The last time I walked out after fifteen minutes and watching others who came in after me get their food before me.
Sometimes places get busy and that's understandable. But I would rather wait in a restaurant that treats all its customers with respect ~ not just the regulars. For a tourist town like Port Washington that's essential. But I'd bet most of the tourists bypass this mini-strip mall restaurant (next to a coin laundry and across from a gas station) and head downtown to Horsefeathers or Harry's.
