The Great Plains Sauce & Dough Company
The Great Plains Sauce & Dough Company was established in May of 1979. We have weathered the storms of business and prospered among chain operations with far larger marketing budgets. Why? Because GPS&D Co. isn't about being the biggest or the busiest. It's about being The Best.
My all time pizza favorite. It is something very different and you either love it or it just isn't your thing. Not much in between. Pizza is always loaded up, lots of cheese. Taco & Prairie are AWESOME on thick crust with honey. They offer pizza by the slice at lunch - a good way for those of you who haven't been there before to try it!
As past Iowa State University alumni my husband and I have eaten at Great Plains many times and we can honestly say it is the best pizza we have ever had. We have lived all over the United States and whenever we travel back to Iowa to see family, we always allow extra time so we can stop and have some pizza. Even my brother and sister in law will reaarange their schedules so they can go to Great Plains when they are back in Iowa. It is the best!!!!!
I've had many kinds of pizza, including pizza from famous places in Chicago and New York and nothing compares to Great Plains. Lunch deals are great and they are building on for more seating.
Try mixing honey and parmesan cheese for a delicious dipping sauce for the pizza crust.
Great Plains is the best pizza ever. Started back in college, 1989 and have loved it ever since. We now live in Des Moines and still make trips to Ames just for pizza at Great Plains. Nothing has ever topped it. When are you going to open a place in Des Moines.
Great Plains has the best crust, cheese, and is the best pizza. A must when visiting Ames especially for freshman that want to experience an Ames staple and truly become a Cyclone. I don't crave many things but this is one of them. And no I don't work for them. :) Just love their pizza.
A connoisseur of pizza most all of my life I make it a point to try every establishment I possibly can. The first time I had pizza from Great Plains it was delivery, the pizza was hot, delivery time was average, the delivery person friendly.
The crust is very chewy and thick, in fact tubs of honey are included to dip the chunks of thick crust into. The sauce and all the toppings are good but don't seem much different than any of the well know pizza chains. The biggest differance between Great Plains and the others is the crust. The restaraunt itself is small, you wait in line to order and the line usually extends out into the dining area. The line usually moves slow as people order, pick up orders to take home and back to their tables. After you order you carry your drink back to your table and wait for your number to be called. Refills are extra. Overall the pizza is great, the prices fair, and everyone should try it though I recomend take out or delivery.
