The Vierling Restaurant and Marquette Harbor Brewery
The Historic Vierling Restaurant has been a focal point in downtown Marquette for over one hundred years. Located on the corner of Front and Main Streets, the building was originally owned by Martin Vierling. With an emphasis on acoefresh and homemade,ac the Vierling offers an extensive lunch and dinner menu. There is a variety of daily specials and they feature fresh Lake Superior Whitefish, homemade soups, salad dressing and desserts. A well-stocked wine cellar is an added attraction! In Dec. 1995, the Vierling became one of Michiganac2s first brew pubs with the addition of a five barrel micro-brewing system. The brew equipment, direct from Budapest, Hungary is configured to produce some of the finest ales and lagers in 155 gallon hand-crafted batches. The relatively small sized batches of beer insures a fast product turn-over which enables the Vierling to serve the freshest beer possible with a multitude of varieties.
My girlfriend and I went there because she once ate there years ago. She is not partial to fish, but I twisted her arm to try the grilled whitefish - I had the blacken whitefish. Both were wonderful. The wild rice and green beans were okay - nothing too great. We both had soups - she had the French onion soup (not too salty, but was good) - I had the whitefish chowder (excellent, not too creamy a sauce like clam chowder. I had some of their red beer - very good. Atmosphere is wonderful - try to get a table by the back windows to look out over Lake Superior. There are not too many choices in Marquette. We looked at a few places and settled on this - will definitely visit again.
Great location on Lake Superior. Warm environment, but a bit small for the amount of guests that frequent it. If you have a large group, you can call and make a reservation for one of the tables up top, where there is significantly more room and a greater view of the lake. A large selection of foods, but the most popular would be the fish. Always fresh. And they also have several flavors of home-brewed beer. Never tried them, but I've heard great things about the Bluberry Wheat. I've been there twice. Being a college student, I wouldn't go there every weekend, but it's a great place to bring your parents if they're paying.
Pros: One of the best views of the harbor from a classic building/establishment. Always can get a good beer. Great Whitefish!
Cons: Menu could be revisted and offer some good basic items with good portions. Bring back the Peach Wheat beer.
I lived up in marquette for 5 years and my favorite place to eat and drink would have to be the vierling, they have an excellent blueberry microbrew that i missed for 3 years and would drive 7 hours just to get one(and stay at a hotel).
