I Wish I could write a review on this restaurant but when we tried to go at the time I had reserved for my 35th wedding anniversary I found a note on the door informing us that they were closed for a private party.
NOT HAPPY ABOUT BY THIS!
We were staying in South Haven, MI and drove 35 miles to get there. Will NOT go there AGAIN.
Went to AlpenRose on a suggestion from a friend. Had their sunday brunch, which was VERY extensive. we were placed in the back room near the buffet with a view of Central avenue and a wonderful patio. the decor was amazing, we were told each room had an individual design and the one we were in was modeled after a Swiss Ski lodge. Our waiter was fantastic, very nice and friendly and looked like he was authentically European! I cant wait to go back there! I highly recommend this place to anyone! Everyone there seemed happy, friendly, and for a place in a small midwest town it seemed like i was on an expensive European vacation and we were treated like we were VIP! I couldnt help but leave a fantastic tip! Thanks to all of the staff there for a wonderful visit!
Incredibly dismal execution of a great concept.. Its like they hijacked a menu from an upscale dining place and let the dishwasher cook it.. Nothing and I mean nothing of the various dishes we tried surpassed marginally edible.. Sadly left the place hungry because we couldnt eat the tasteless and incorrectly prepared dishes. Wouldnt go back if it were free!
We went to Alpen for dinner, and the food was average, but we had a nice waitress. My wife couldn't finish her food so she had it boxed. The next day when she ate her food, she found a fly in her potatoes. She called the manager (Jerry) and he said they didn't put it there intentionially, and didn't even apologize.
Its sad to see this beautiful property managed so poorly.
My husband and I had dinner at Alpenrose tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. The atmosphere was cozy and the service was excellent. We both found the food to be tasty, well presented and the portions large. In fact since we wanted to share a dessert, we both took half of our dinners home. The desserts were all tempting but we settled on the Tuxedo Torte and it was fantastic. We will go back again and would highly recommend it.
If you like your food over cooked, this is the place to go. Chicken is dry, sides are often not fresh, and their idea of a rare steak is on that has no pink at all. The menue seldom changes and entrees show no creativity. The presentation is average at best. If there are more than a few tables occupied, you'll experience poor service. When the restaurant is empty, it seems like hte wait staff finds other ways to be amused, and tend to forget the only occupied table in the house. This is a beautiful facility, and I hope that they can find management worthy its potential.
The best way to enjoy this restaurnat is to walk through and enjoy this beautiful building. Do your best to ignore the dirty areas and to see what a beautiful place this once was! Avoid the food! I love the atmospher this wonderful place creates, but the service and food struggle to be even average. If you complain about the food, the server will be condecending, and tell you meat must be dry if it properly cooked.
My wife and I dropped into the Alpen Rose right after Holland’s Tulip Festival parade and before the dinner rush. Our experience was very pleasant. While the wine selection could use some embellishment, the entrées we selected were great and many of the others looked equally tantalizing.
I had the pan-seared basil Portobello, stuffed with artichokes and tomato risotto rice with fresh asparagus. My wife had the chicken fettuccine with green olives, sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, baby spinach, and a garlic pesto cream sauce. Both dishes were textural and full of flavor w/o being over-seasoned. The sun-dried tomatoes and spinach combined very well, with the green olives adding a nice bite to the flavor. My risotto was a smooth and creamy texture – just the way I make it (and like it) when at home. The portions were nicely presented and large – my wife took half of hers home. The price of each entrée was lower that what I would of expected given the quality (and quantity).
Our waitress was very pleasant and efficient, checking on us often w/o being intrusive. Surprisingly, she knowingly didn’t adjust our bill upwards for the coffee we ordered after the check was presented. A very nice and unexpected find! I will definitely repeat the next time I’m in Holland.
