Fricano's Pizza Tavern
The most famous pizzeria in Michigan, this establishment is believed to be the very first pizzeria in the state. They have been serving mouthwatering pizzas with fresh and delicious toppings for decades.
Sorry, vegetarian folks...they use lard in their crust! Just ask them! We ordered an all-cheese pizza, went to pick it up, they were pulling pepperoni off the top of it! When I asked what was going on, they stated that the perpperoni indicated it was a cheese pizza...go figure!?! When I protested, they spilled the beans about the lard, so we had to turn it down.
After moving here last year - I can share that I have had fits trying to find good pizza in this area. West Michigan pizza places do this thing where they put tons of salty green olives on their pizzas and then charge you as if you are getting a nice variety of vegetables. It's completely bizarre, taste disgusting, and frightens me that folks here don't understand that green olives are a drink garnish - not a pizza topping.
I was so thankful to find Fricano's. It's REAL pizza without the drink garnishes and I do not consider it 'expensive'. The cost is average. I also did not find the staff 'rude' at all. I found them 'professional'. Just because they don't fuss over your new hairdo or make googly eyes at you does not mean they are rude. It means they are REAL - just like the PIZZA.
Thin, greasy, and burnt around the edges..... the way Pizza should be. Me and my family have been coming to Fricano's in Grand Haven all my life (and I'm 30) and the one in Grand Rapids on Alpine, and it is the pizza by which all others are measured. Don't listen to the haters, there is a reason people are lined up out the door alomost every night. As far as Air conditioning and credit cards, they don't need em, all they have is Pizza, thin crust, one size.
I'll have one with everytning but, and a cold beer.
Don't forget to order one for the road, nothing like reheated fricanos and eggs in the morning.
On a side note, if you want Air conditioning, credit cards, and other stuff on the menu like pasta and meatballs, try Fricanos in Grand Rapids on Alpine north of 96. Same pizza, plus other stuff.
I have heard a lot of different opinions about Fricano's. You either like it, or you don't. The locals tend to fall into two camps.. Fricano's and Clover Bar. Sorry Clover.. to me, your pizza's taste like cardboard... no flavor at all. I do reccommend ordering extra sauce, at Fricanos. This place always has a line out the door in the summer.. and repeat customers for years and years. They are doing something right for sure.
If you've never had the pizza from Fricano's...get it. You will be blown away how such a greasy, plain tasting pizza gets such rave reviews.
I mean, don't stand in line to get it....you will be disappointed...but on a slow night order it. It is so bad you will be puzzled by all these superior reviews. Please check back with us and let us know.
I'm not a fan of Fricanos either. You'll either like it or hate it, and honestly, I didn't care for it. The waitress was sort of snotty about the whole thing like I should be kissing her butt because I was seated in THE Fricanos.... lol.
That said, I don't care much for Clover Bar either. Give me Shields or Buddy's.... or Cottage Inn... any day.
It's just not that great. Sorry.
I use to haaate Fricanos; it's strange, but when I was pregnant, I really craved it and now I still do. You do have to order extra sauce on it though; they kind of skimp on that. I prefer to order takeout, especially in the summer. No air-conditioning!
I found out a special way to order it from a worker that has worked there for YEARS and it is awesome! Order your favorite toppings usually --Everything But with Extra Sauce and Crispy
It is so good and especially in the morning. yumm
