I've been working for the DoD for the last 25 years..my 1st stop back in the U.S. has always been to eat a pizza and salad at Latinas. Will be back in Flint Dec. 1st 07, and know where I will stop on the way to my parents home...can'nt wait...best pizza any where!
Like Jerry S, I was very much a regular of Latina's in the 70's and 80's...went there every Friday night for their Lasagna. It has gone downhill since. I have visited twice in the last several years and was greatly disappointed each time. It's pricey because they spend to much for advertising and not enough for quality ingredients.
I have friends who disagree....this is an old establishment with a lot of regulars. Maybe it's just me.....
The food was great especially the antipasto! The service was horrible. I have never had such poor service and I was with a party of 4. Our trash and dirty dishes were left after we payed AND TIPPED, we stayed for the show. The waitress, Angela, didn't come back to see if we needed anything...not even once. We had to ask other waitresses for things that we needed. After ordering a pitcher of beer and finishing it like 40 min. later we had to go up to the bar to pay for it. We sat and watched the waitress sitting down talking with other servers and chain smoking while she wrapped silverware. Gross!
Have been going to Latina's since they opened the doors in the mid to late 60's. Although the food is still decent, it's not the same as it was when Mary and her family owned it. They are pricey, and take out orders are subject to being mixed up, and quality is hit and miss. The Stromboli, Antipasto and Baked Ravioli are still very good, but really overpriced. Latina's used to be a must, but not today. If you never had the old Latina's you may like it, but if you use to frequent the old Latina's you will be disappointed. Great has become average.
With the huge group we had the service was fairly good. Young waitresses need a bit more training but we had great conversations going so no one got upset.
The food... wow... the food was incredible. We had the lasagna... wonderful flavor... and they did not skimp on the cheese. We had pizza... no skimping their either. And we had the most incredible AntiPasto Salad ... we ordered the family size and they weren't kidding. The tomatoes were red and flavorful... and you did not have all lettuce with none of the good stuff... you had a great amount of the goodies on it. And the cheese was melt in your mouth good as was the house dressing.
I have to say... this is a restaurant we will visit again the next time we are in the area. Glad a local suggested it to us.
Being both a pizza lover, and former employee of a great pizzeria in NY(not NYC!!), I was dissapointed by the fact that Latinas pizza is actually worse then Sbarro's. It reminds me of bad mall pizza with toppings that are worse. In my opinion it falls into the mall pizza clone of too thin crust thats a little undone and toppings that would fall under the catagory of bland.
