In the 1970s, third-generation restaurateur James C. Kokas dreamed of opening an upscale restaurant in downtown Detroit. By the mid-1980s all the pieces were in place to transform an old taxi garage on East Larned Street into one of the most elegant restaurants in the Midwest, Opus One. Today the buildingac2s smart faA$$ade and comfortable dining room and bar, is only matched by its exquisite cuisine.
This was my fifth time at Opus one this year. The first four were great, but after tonight I will never enter this restaurant again. The service was awful. 20 minutes to take our drink order. 45 minutes for shrimp cocktail that were four shrimp that look liked they were frozen and defrosted. When I got my meal 1 of my 4 scallops was completely raw. I sent it back (first time anywhere I have ever sent a meal back) It came back and the scallop was still raw, but the plate had been microwaved. The mango salsa that was served on the scallops was no longer cold, but was bubbling hot. I again pointed this out to the waiter. He claimed they did not microwave it, but put it under a hot lamp. I told him I no longer wanted my meal. The manager took my meal off the bill and acted like he did me a huge favor. I did not eat the meal why should I pay for it.
As we were leaving my husband stopped to tell the owner of our experience. He made all sorts of excuse like he had 3 staff members all in, he was sick and was supposed to be on vacation. Like that's my problem. He was extremely rude and got in my personal space. I have never in my life been treated like this. What an awful experience. Very disappointed and will not eat at a restaurant where the owner treats customers like this. Unbelievable!
Love Opus, my brother recently had his rehearsal dinner here. Can't tell you enough, for private parties this place is great. They have a special section of the restaurant for rent for events like this. The food was outstanding, Alaskan salmon stuffed with king crab wow! The decor is getting a little outdated, they probably need a refresh, the food is still the reason to come here. The staff was great, the whole family had a great time. Would recommend for similar parties.
My husband and I dined at Opus One last night and we are still taking about it today! We came in with high expectations and are pleased to say each and every one of them was met. Service was spectacular, the food was absolutely to die for, and the restaurant itself was gorgeous. I would highly recomend Opus One to anyone looking for a wonderful night out.
Made dinner reservations here for Valentines Day date. Was given 3 different waiters, who all ignored my table for any service, not even filling up water. Ordered a fish dish, that turned out too be really bland and tasteless. When we complained to the dining manager, and tried to order another dish, he gave us an accusingly look and arguement like we were trying to get a free dinner and could not afford to dine there. We left disappointed and my date did not even get a chance to reorder. I had the rack of lamb, $45, which was okay, but I've had better at a less price at a family restaurant.
