I have been going to Lafayette Coney Island for more than 35 years. It is the standard for Coney's in Detroit (and anywhere else for that matter).
Our daughters first went there when they were infants and got a taste of the chilli from my wife's fingertip. Now they are in their 30's and we have to take them to Milwaukee for our youngest daughter.
"3 on 2, no onions" is kind of a family saying. Not only are the coney's great, but the guys who work there are kind, efficient, friendly, and have to put up with lots of drunks when there is a big event downtown. Cops, guys in suits, Red Wings fans, teenagers and families sit elbow to elbow and enjoy a great "fast food" meal.
There may be imitations, but this is the place for real Detroit coney dogs.
P.S. There is a place on the east side where you can by the dogs and chili by the brick. It's just that eating these at home just doesn't have the same atmosphere.
