Evie's Tamales

Description

Easily the best food bargain in Detroit is this thoroughly unpretentious diner in the heart of Mexicantown. The best tamales in the state and perhaps in the entire United States are churned out here. The choice of what you can put inside the steamed corn husk of the tamales includes spiced-just-right pork or chicken, beans or even fruit. The decor has only the bare essentials, but that deficiency is counter-balanced by solicitous service and an extensive menu beyond tamales, including steak and eggs, short ribs, menudos and botanas (generous chips, cheese and vegetables platters).

Don't let the fact that this place is a complete dump deter you. So is Juarez Mexico, but if you want top notch tamales without going south of the border Evie's is your best bet. For added authenticity you probably have a better chance of being kidnapped by a violent Latino drug cartel in Southwest Detroit than in Juarez.

My family LOVES this place, we used to live in SW Detroit and have since moved, but we still make special trips there! Ive tried alot off the menu and loved everything (with exception of the bacon in the breakfast burrito) (its not smoked ) But the breakfast burritos are around $1 and are big! also try the fideo or the carnitas or barbacoa...and of course the tamales!!!

Evie's has the freshest food and the quality and taste are excellent. I had the best Botana ever at her place. Went at lunchtime with a friend who loves this place. It is not open late so I was lucky that day we went for lunch.

My favorite restaurant in the world. I'm a taco connisouer, and very few mexican restaurants make tacos I like, Evies are fantastic. The beans and rice are perfect also. The tamales are wonderful and here's what you should order. Order a cheese quassidia and place the tamale inside the quassidia, add sliced avocado, not gauc, some of the hot sauce in the red bottle (not too hot), and you have a real treat. The chps and salsa rule, the pop comes in cans which is better than fountain pop. the place is unpretentous. We took a dozen people here for lunch after my wedding and it was a fantastic time. Love Evies! Gene and Marci

I frequent many Mexican restaurants in Southwest Detroit and have for over 30 years. This is one of the best of the best all things considered. They DO accept major credit cards now, but the place retains it's very casual family atmosphere. Nothing fancy here except the quality of the daily specials, like fajitas and carnitas for around $5. As previously stated, best tamales I've ever had. Try 'em with some pico de gallo for an authentic taste. Diana the owner refuses to change very much, after all, her recipes have been in the family for generations. The menudo and caldo de res are popular hangover remedies and rightly so, but $.99 breakfast burritos are outstanding as well. Every cop and construction worker, teacher, fireman, and all the long time neighbors know this place. I even saw the biggest restaurant owner in the whole area there one early morning ! They could do well at night but that's time to go home to the family according to Diana :). A 'must not miss' on a street with many choices, and this one may be the best...Tom

Best Tamales around!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/11/08
Although I love Mexican food, I was never a big Tamale eater until I had them from here. You have to order specialty tamales an hour in advance if you want them by the dozen, but they are well priced and everywhere I take them, they disappear with smiles and appreciative remarks on how good they are. My brother expects them for his birthday, Jalapeno and Cheese are our favorite. Fresh and tasty describes everything I've had at Evie's. It doesn't have the best atmosphere, but it is clean and the food will definitely bring you back, especially the Tamales!

We're transplants from Texas and know a thing or two about good Mexican food. Let me tell you, this is the real deal - by far the best Michigan has to offer. Great tamales, mole to die for, and tasty beans/rice. As Evie said to us, it's the basic (beans and rice) things you gotta get right - and they do it everyday. And don't forget about the free Mexican baked goods for desert.

Best of the Bunch!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/22/06
In all of Mexico Town, this is my favorite. The food is great, and the price is lower than you could cook it for at home. Better food than place "X" accross the street, at a much lower price. If you want some great food for a low price, this is your place. If you want some drinks and nachos before the game, this is not your restaurant.
