Prickly Pear Southwest Cafe
The Prickly Pear Cafe has been an Ann Arbor favorite since first opening in 1991. The menu features many southwest inspired specialties. Mexican favorites are given a unique twist including many vegetarian options and outstanding soups and salads. The butternut squash soup is famous locally, while the buffalo meat enchiladas even merited mention in Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps' autobiography.
Great food and drinks. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area. It is not the biggest place on Main Street so big groups could be an issue depending on when you go. Best in the summer when you can sit out back, but it is still great all year round.
Consistently good to very good food -- soups are terrific. This is a good choice for groups that include both meat-eaters and vegetarians. But service is sometimes hurried and you can't linger over coffee and dessert if anyone is waiting -- you'll be nudged along.
We've lived in Ann Arbor for three years and this is our favorite restaurant. We've never had a bad meal there having tried most things on the menu. The chicken sope is fabulous! Also try the recurring specials - shrimp and scallop quesadilla or buffalo enchilada. The atmosphere is nice and the service is usually top notch. The prices are about 12-19 per entre in the evening and a little less for lunch. Did we mention the chicken sope? Eat here. It's worth it.
My husband and I were driving back from Columbus, Ohio, to Grand Rapids, and stopped in Ann Arbor to see what we could find for dinner. We stopped on that cute little stretch of restaurants on Main St and thought the Prickly Pear looked fun. And let me tell you - the Sweet Potato Enchiladas are the best. I had them clear back in 2002; they must have been great if I still love them. =)
I was introduced to the Prickly Pear in Dec 2004 and loved it the second I walked in. The garlic and onion soup is out of this world! I had the cheese quesadillas and the salad that comes with it was the best food on the plate. Everyone in my party walked away satisfied and spreads the good word.
