My first visit to Evansville was to the Deerhead. I had a juicy, hot, veggie sub with fries. The staff was very attentive and the atmosphere was terrific. It gave a downhome like feeling, but a little buzzy at the same time. When my son comes in town to visit, this is a menu must!!! Keep up the great work:)
the food is ok at best. The pizza sauce has too much sugar in it and dine in pizza will cost you bigtime.
I recommend the deli sandwiches, the pork steak or the 2 for 1 pizza drive thru special.
the owners seem smug or just too busy to look at you but the bartenders rock. The Bands are ok but the same ones play there too much. If you like hippy music or Johnny Cash covers you'll hear it there over and over and over again.
Great food, a little pricey and food prep. is slow especially during lunch. The wait staff are super nice and this place is so much fun during the weekends with live bands although I have as of yet to see a jazz band perform there.
I've had some really good pizza (haven't we all) but nothing I've had tops the Double-Decker Pizza at Deerheads. I've not gone to Chicago or NY, but I've gone to some of the best places along the Ohio River. Here in Evansville the best place to get pizza people say is Turoni's; but that's if you want super thin sliced pizza that doesn't really taste all that more spectacular than any other pizza. They're WAY over-rated. I'd rather pay for Pizza Hut or Pappa Johns over Turoni's.
Now, I've never ate at every pizza joint in town, but who has? I've gone to the places that people talk about and the place that talks the most to my stomach is the pizza at Deerheads.
A group of four hungary guys can barely put away a large. Two or on a good day three slices is all you'll be able to manage. For around $20 for a large pie you really don't want to eat any more than that.
The specialty, a Double-Decker pizza. What is it? Basically two pizzas, one on top of the other. Thin crust, but not crunchy, packed thick and filled with your choice toppings. Great sauce, great taste. It's best to come hungary, because you'll leave so full you'll be grinning.
It might be a little expensive for one pizza, but it's basically two. I'd order a small (~$13) and pick it up at their drive-thru window if you're eating for 1-3 people. You'll be suprised at how few slices it will take to fill you up. But it taste so good that you wish you could eat more; that's part of what makes this pizza so good.
The serivce has always been good to me, it doesn't seem like the wait is that long. I think they only have like two ovens so if it takes a while for your order than that's probably why. But while you wait in the evenings, there is usually live jazz or other music.
You can listen to them either in the bar, the family area or in the screened sidewalk porch. It's a real treat for any and especially your out of town friends that want to experience something original.
