I was born and rised in Kokomo,In. Ray drive in has the best tenderlion sandwish, period.God they are good. I just wish you could get a tenderlion like that in Fort Smith, Ar. You can t even buy a tenderlion sandwish here.
I not from Indiana or Kokomo originally, I married into a family from Kokomo. One of the best landmarks in Kokomo is Ray's drive-in. Not a place you can eat healthy, but all is good. I live on the east coasts and I never find something like Ray's. Whenever I get near Kokomo on my trips back home, one of our first stops is Ray's and the Tenderloins, regular not King Size. I can never get through the king size it is two meals and should come with two buns, because half of it is outside the bun. Got to add on the old fashion Cherry Coke, Coke with Cherry Juice, it is awesome. The fried mushrooms come out steaming hot. If you are looking for a place of fine dining, quiet and candlelight, then Ray's isn't the place for you. Atmosphere is great, waitresses are awesome, friendly and at times over-worked. According to my wife, it has been there for over 40 years. One of the best spots to go to that isn't a chain and not on 31. The locals know all about it and would like to keep it a secret. I just wish I could package this back to DC and sell it here. It would definitely catch the midwesterner that is located in the area.
Good product at a good price. Can't find that around much anymore.
This place is to be avoided at all costs. I stopped there yesterday, excited to eat at a vintage drive-in restaurant. Since it was nearly 90 degrees, I decided to eat inside. After walking in and sitting at a table, I started looking at the menu and glanced at other patrons' meals. There was an elderly gentleman seated beside me with a plate of some sort of greasy, fried meat. At the table across from me, a couple left their table with their meals mostly uneaten. I sat at my table for several minutes and wasn't waited on, which was a blessing in disguise. I got up from the table and quietly walked back to my car.
The only positive comment I can make about Ray's Drive-In is that the food prices listed on the menu are very cheap. On the other hand, you get what you pay for.
I just moved here from Arizona and have always known Indiana for their tenderloins. I'm thrilled I live a couple blocks from Rays! The food is excellent, prices are cheap and their king tenderloins are massive and well worth the price. I've lived in Kokomo since April 25th and have ate there like 20 times in the past 2 months. Just found out im pregnant 9 days ago so I think the tenderloins will be my cravings lol. Its a must for anyone to try!!
The swiss steak sandwich is the best ever! I order mine with extra gravy! I moved away from Kokomo years ago but when-ever I visit, I get Ray's to take home. The prices are competitive and the service is good also! The same waitresses are there that have been there for many years! I am now trying to replicate the gravy for the swiss steak sandwiches so I can make then at home!!
Known for the largest tenderoin around. Trouble is if you are heavier than average these seats are not for you. Too tightly spaced in a very small dining room to eat enjoyably.
Longtime feature in Kokomo, and not the best food, but average. Dining area really needs to be enlarged and the seating changed.
