This is my favorite Chinese restaurant ever. Extremely clean. Pink tablecloths and cloth napkins. Very clean restrooms. They will customize a dish on the menu. Their sesame chicken is spicy. They will make it non spicynwith sweet and sour sauce and water chestnuts and pea pods. Delicious. I get that customized dish every time. My friend gets the old fashioned dish of egg foo young. Polite staff. Best restaurant. I see many people coming to get take outs. We come over from laporte. The Chinese restaurant in this city and also in Michigan city are filthy. Can t eat at a restaurant when so obviously dirty. Everyone should go to mandarin house. We really love it. Probably going again this fir or sat and to see a movie that isn t offered in this area. Good job south bend....
Very pleased to find Chinese food I actually love! Service was great, the people are very friendly and I especially love their crab rangoon. It s also very affordable which is a great plus. I recommend eating here if you re in the mood for some chinese :)
My family relocated from Chicagoland to South Bend about six years ago. We definitely miss the many world class dinning opportunities living in a big city (but I wouldn't trade the slower pace of SB now that we are here). A friend suggested that the Mandarin House was the best Chinese food restaurant in the area so we decided to give them a try.
We ordered take out, they had what we wanted. I found the employees to be genuinely friendly (which was a pleasant surprise based on one the above reviews). My family thought the food was very good. We were very pleased with this experience - we will go back and I am happy to recommend them to you (at least, for take out). Next time, we will dine in and I will report back at that time.
I was looking forward to lunch. What a great day for Chinese …
T and I sat sipping on our soup and chatting … waiting … waiting … waiting … finally after 45 minutes of waiting, we get our food and promptly request to go boxes b/c we are already going to be late due to their slow service. The waitress’s rude response to our informative yet polite grievance was something along the lines of, “You should have told me that you were in a hurry when you ordered.”
PLEASE LADY! We’ve dined at this restaurant numerous times – never does it take 45 minutes to be served; we were one of the first people in the restaurant – watched it fill up around us and at least 4 tables be served their meals as we sat there.
We again lodged our complaint with the hostess … who told us that “Next time you tell waitress you on lunch hour.” HOW THE HECK DID THIS BECOME OUR FAULT?
The manager (I presume) stepped up and reiterated the other 2 staff member’s point of view. I retaliated with “FORTY FIVE MINUTES WE WAITED! FORTY FIVE!”
Manager replies with “Sorry we are busy.”
Me: “Well you weren’t when we got here!!! Yet somehow we sat hungry watching the place fill up and others being served.”
The hostess then tries to comfort us with, “I will tell the waitress what happened to you.”
WHAT THE HECK HAS HAPPENED TO CUSTOMER SERVICE? OH AND SOUTH BEND AREA RESIDENTS … IF YOU WANT TO BE TREATED DECENTLY, DO NOT GO TO MANDERIN HOUSE!!!!
Get back to work, wolf down some of my semi-warm lunch and head for the phones.
I have been going there since i was born and it allways was my favorite place 2 eat!! But ever since my relative sold the mandrin house the new owners ran the place to the ground!! the food tastes bland and is not up 2 par with the previous owner. Its sad such a great place is now ruined!
The food is amazing but some of the staff is extremely rude. The last time I dined there our waitress got in our face and asked us for a bigger tip!!!!! It made me just a slight bit worried about dinning there again so now I just get carry out ! :)
My husband & I were coming back into town from a trip out west. I called ahead to see what time they would be closing. I was told 9PM. I asked if we got there before 9, could we still be served and was told YES! We arrived about 8:56PM and were told that the kitchen staff had been allowed to leave, so therefore no service. False advertising and false information. I have eaten there before but will not go back. We went to J.W. Chen's and invited in as though we were family! And the service and food was delicious. I will return to JW Chen,s. Wonderful, warm & friendly staff!
