This was our first dining experience at Doc Pierce’s and I must say I was a little disappointed.
First off, I ordered a dirty martini and it was definitely dirty (chunky olive juice) & they don’t make blue cheese stuffed olives so I had plain.
My husband and I both ordered the salad with avocado/ranch dressing but it was pretty much just regular ranch – no trace of anything avocado. The salad was plain old iceberg lettuce. Their home made croutons, which were a big hit on the reviews, were good but really greasy.
Next came the French onion soup. This was another subject of much raving by other reviewers. In our opinion, it was just OK. So far, nothing beats Strongbow Inn in Valparaiso (come to think of it, they really have wonderful homemade croutons, too – and a to-die-for ranch dressing).
For the entrée, my husband had the filet/shrimp combo with steak fries and he enjoyed his dinner except the shrimp were a little tough. The only other little complaint was that the menu said the filet would be topped with a mushroom cap and when it came, it just had two measly button mushrooms on the side. All in all, the meat was good and cooked to a perfect medium, as specified.
I, on the other hand, ordered the Sirloin (also medium) with a baked potato. The potato was fine. (The butter and sour cream were served in plastic cups – a little on the chintzy side.) The steak: what a nightmare. The more I cut into it (with a cheap, old, dull knife), the worse it got. By the time I had made enough attempts to find a “good part,” it was too late to send it back. There was a HUGE line of gristle that really made at least half of the steak inedible. And, bad enough on its own but also coupled with the huge gristle, the steak was most definitely NOT medium – at best, a very “juicy” medium rare. It was practically the texture of pudding. Ugh. Very disappointing.
I might try Doc Pierce’s again and I would either get the filet or one of the nice looking chicken selections on the menu (or maybe just hope to be there on a good night). The atmosphere was decent, a little dated, but that’s kind of their “shtick” and our waitress was very pleasant.
This is a nice casual place to get some good grub. My wife goes here mainly for the croutons on their salads. They are fresh! I myself like the Steak Neptune. Nice atmosphere with Tiffany style lights hanging overhead with the lighting dimmed. Another cool thing they have is a loft where there are 6(?) tables to eat at also. Definitely a good local restaurant.
