Old Hickory Bar-B-Q
The Old Hickory Bar-B-Q has been a Dayton tradition since 1952. The first restaurant was opened by Steve and Sylvia Kolb. At one time Steve and Sylvia had 4 locations in the Dayton area. The original location was on East Third Street. In 1962, they opened Brown Street location with Steve's sister Irene and her husband Joe Kiss. In 1969, Steve and Sylvia opened the Main Street location, and in 1978 they opened the Woodman location. In 1989 Joe and Irene Kiss became the sole owners of the Brown Street location and renamed it Joe Kiss
Went to the location on Main street. The onion loaf was very good - actually all of the FRIED food was very good. Don't be deceived by the name though - there isn't a bit of hickory OR smoking in their ribs. The ribs were broiled and tasteless. The chicken I had with it was basically the same rotiserrie chicken I could buy at Walmart. Both meat items were covered in an unflavorful BBQ sauce. Open Pit sauce would have been better. I DO know how to cook baby back ribs - they obviously do not. Damons is a HUGE step above this place and that's really not saying much. I will never go there again - should have went with my first instinct which was to go to the Waffle House!!!
Old Hickory on Brown Street serves the best Steaks in Dayton. The long lines to get in should be your first clue.
The wait staff work their butts off to take care of you.
If you want fast food... go somewhere else!
Old Hickory is wonderful!
Went on new years eve 2008 to the north main location. Waited for an hour for a table of four.
We all ordered a full slab of ribs. It took almost
an hour to get our food. Our waitress was waiting on
half the restaurant. We never saw her again after she got a table of 21. The ribs were undercooked. Very bad ribs. I will never go again.
I think the one review before me is wrong! For one they have great ribs and all three locations are independently owned and operated! For great BBQ with great proportions and price it is by far the best around. But I say try it for yourself you won't leave hungry or broke. 5 Stars
OK... all those that commented before me are WRONG. This particular location is carry out and they do not serve the steaks and prime rib... only the Bar B-Q, no steaks. Now... if you want those good steaks the Old Hickory on N. Main used to have them until management changed. I suggest the Hickory on Brown st., not affiliated with the other 2 although often is thought of as being the same, even by locals. I list this location as average because they changed their ribs some time ago and just aren't the same anymore.
My dad took me there when I was a child ( and he went years before that ) and have been going ever since and I am 58 now. I drive from Springfield Ohio to go there. I have heard people in there say I am from Texas or South Carolina or etc. and I have to stop here for the best ribs and steak around. That place is always busy during the week and always packed on the week-ends The chicken is awesome as well. Very nice place to relax and eat. We have alot of our famiy celebrations there and you can dress up or down it doesnt matter you will fit in.
This is a family favorite and has been for 40+ years. Their ribs are awesome... and their steaks are fabulous. I think they have the best house dressing in town. And it's awesome that you can eat in or carry out. We even took ribs to my brother inlaw when my sister was in labor at Miami Valley Hospital. He was thrilled, and she was annoyed, because she couldn't eat anything and they smelled soooooooooooooo good!
The service is fantastic!!! Be sure to check it out!
