Calling Slyman's a restaurant is almost a misnomer. Lunch counter or take out place would be more appropriate. The clientele are mostly local (as in neighborhood) workers. Slyman's is not open on weekends and closes after 2 in the afternoon which limits or prevents anyone from outside the immediate area from visiting. What restaurant there is for those who don't run off with their order back to work consists of a few closely spaced kitchen tables. It's not exactly ambiance central. Neither is the surrounding neighborhood which is probably why the hours are so limited. But people don't stand in line at noon for the ambiance. This is one one of those quantity is more important than quality places. They do have other meats and things besides corned beef too but that's all you ever hear about. Truthfully, I've only had the pastrami so I have no real opinion on the corned beef. And I've had better pastrami, even if not as mountainous. But mountainous is obviously the draw here. They also have breakfast for those willing to venture into the rugged neighborhood before the sun comes up. Parking is limited to the street too which can add to your adventure in this neighborhood. Somehow though, Slyman's seems to win every vote by local magazines and newspapers for best corned beef in Cleveland. I often wonder considering the hours how many of the voters have even been there in the last year, or two. It sort of strikes me of the kind of place that is driven more on local legend than anything else. But if you work in the area, or can get there in the limited hours and are looking for a corned beef sandwich that it would help if you can unhinge your jaw to eat, and you don't mind sitting at a little kitchen table, you'll probably love the place.
