Schmidt's Restaurant Und Sausage Haus

Description

Family owned since 1886, this restaurant is set in the enchanting and delightfully quaint cobblestone streets of the German District and serves a full range of German dishes. They are best known for their delicious sausages and bratwurst and they are open daily for lunch and dinner. For added interest, the restaurant is reputedly haunted by the ghost of original owner, J. Fred Schmidt.

Where to start. My husband and I decided to have a weekend away and so away we went to Schmidt's Sausage Haus which we saw on food network. While waiting for 2 hours we checked out the fudge house nextdoor (also owned by Schmidt's) $9.99 for a 1/2 pound of candy, not in this lifetime. Finally seated of course next to the loudest table of drunks. We filled our plates from the buffet took a bite of the sauerkrat sucked, tried 3 different sausages sucked, german potato salad sucked, the only thing we ate was mashed potatoes and mac & cheese needless to say we left hungry after paying our bill $41.00 for 2 buffets, 2 drinks, and 2 cream puffs. Very expensive for the selection. We ate the cream puffs back in our hotel room not bad but not the best dessert I ever had. This is the second time we took food networks advice and were let down. We went al the way to Memphis for Rendevous Ribs, very dry and cold. My husband makes Hillshire Farms smoked sausage on our grill at home that are way better than Schmidts. Maybe I need to get the Food Network at our house. Ditto from my husband. We gave it 1 star because we couldn't give it none.

We went to Schmidt's for my sons birthday. We all got the buffet, which is NOT worth the money!!! It is truly sad that we went for the brats and Bahama mamas and the best thing on the buffet was the meatloaf and the German potato salad. Our service was terrible we sat with empty drinks for 20 minutes before another waitress came over and we asked for refills. She acted all put out to help us. The cream puffs where good. But I can honestly say this was our first and only visit.

This place is a Columbus land mark! The food is awesome and so is the atmosphere. The buffet is a must and if your still hungry have a huge cream puff to go with it...Top notch , easily one of my favorite places to eat!

Schmidt's has been a hit with our family for years. The sausages and the breads are always good. The desserts are to die for. Set in historic German Village, this restaurant is worth the trip.

We heard from a local friend of ours how good Schmidt's was. We showed up 20 minutes before closing and were not greeted warmly, but the waitress was more than happy to take care of us out of towners. Schnitzel( overcooked a bit), Kraut balls, bavarian sandwich( GREAT!), Peanut butter creme buff( in fridge a little to long but good. We drove and hour out of our way to eat there and were pretty pleased. I would however make this the only time I eat a full meal. Next time Creme Puff only

If you are looking for sausages and sauer kraut, THIS is the place. It is also crowded and busy, and you will not find healthy options in this unique place.
