Built before the Civil War and completely remodeled in 1936 by the Cal Milam family, the Merrick Inn served as the manor house for one of Lexington"s finest horse farms. It was here at Merrick Place, that Milam and his groom, Mr. Johnson, trained the fabled "Exterminator", Kentucky Derby winner of 1918. Here also, "Tut Tut", Komuraski, Commodore, Brown Wisdom, Miss Joy, Milkmaid, McKee and Dust Flower started on their paths to fame and fortune. None of these, however, gained such widespread fame as Merrick himself. Merrick finished in the money 157 times, winning 62 races. Merrick became a member of the Milam family not only because of his success at the races, but also because he was "worthy in deeds and noble in character". The Merrick Inn has been owned and operated by the Murray family for nearly 40 years. Offering the finest in traditional southern dining and innovative specials. Times have changed, but we believe the beauty and charm of our inn remain the same.
The food was fantastic but our service was despicable. My wife and I were there for our first wedding anniversary and our experience really deflated the evening. It started out wonderful until some people arrived who were clearly regulars. At that point were were completely ignored and I mean COMPLETELY. I noticed that the server was giving everyone else a wine list and telling them about wine specials except us, even though we were ordering wine. After eating we waited about 15 minutes for a dessert menu before stopping and asking our server for one and we still didn't have one 10 minutes after that. I had to get up and ask the hostess for one (she's the only reason that I didn't give this place 1 star). There was probably a span of about 30-45 minutes where our server never came to our table.
If this service was the result of being too busy or incompetence on the server's part, it would have been more excusable and not have bothered us too much. It seemed like the server was actively trying to ignore us for no reason. We weren't rude or badly dressed; we were cheerful since it was our 1st anniversary. The only thing that we could come up with is that the server could tell that we weren't the upper crust of Lexington society and didn't expect much of a tip from us. Thanks, Merrick Inn, for making my wife and I feel very common on our 1st anniversary.
Ever heard of country cooking with white tablecloths? Well this is the place to go to see it. Nice service by experienced staff, decent menu, very southern though. If your looking for half a fried chicken with grits, you can find it here. It's a very quaint location, nice menu, and good for a night out with the kids at home.
The Merrick is always a treat. I eat there about twice a year, and the food, presentation, service, and atmosphere are always wonderful. A fair wine list features some boutique wines, available by the glass and in tasting (2 oz) sizes. A great way to try some excellent wines without mortgaging the house. Foodwise, Merrick Inn is Kentucky Gourmet. Local twists on classic continental dishes are frequesntly part of the menu. Particularly good: Banana Pepper appetizer (Very Lexington), Walleyed Pike, Filet Mignon
This was a great little restaurant. A little hard to find as it is surrounded by townhomes and away from the main strip. I believe this place was a former house, as there are many small dining rooms. My friend and I were sat in a room that had a small fireplace. It was cozy, relaxing and had a wonderful and intimate ambiance. Outside, on the patio, there was a fun crowd enjoying the conversations and cocktails amongst all. conversations
