I don t know where to begin. I will start with the positives: Friendly waitress, and amount of food served.
Now the negatives: If you order a glass of soda you only get one refill then every one extra is charged. It is fountain soda in a small glass that is filled mostly with ice I have never seen a place do this before.
We ordered the schnitzel with lemon and spatzel. The schnitzel with lemon was 1.00 more than some of the other options of schnitzel. It literally was served with 2 slices of old lemon that was mainly rind. The lemon was shriveled and smelled like it had been sitting for a while. I asked the waitress what I was supposed to season my spatzel with and she said that is what the lemon was for so I asked if I could have a little bit more and she brung out one WHOLE slice of lemon.
The spatzel was decent but some of it was rather chewy and looked like it had been precooked?
I ordered a diet soda and asked for extra lemon and was given one slice. I was afraid to ask for more as they were being so stingy with it. Normally a restaurant that advertises a dish with lemon actually gives you enough to be able to taste it.
The schnitzel was ok but it wasn t a very good cut of meat as it had alot of grissel and fat in it and seemed like it had been cooked in old grease.
I m not trying to complain but after reading the reviews for this place I was very excited to try it.
I have never had german food before but from what I can tell the concept sounds great and looks good they just don t execute it well. If you ask for hot sauce (which i m sorry if that is odd with German cuisine) you will get a bottle of dark brown sauce with black stuff crudded all over the cap that is old and I believe musta been the the bottle they purchased when the place was first opened.
Before you go sincerely listen to my review as I have no reason to bash this place just being honest. The portions were good but I don t need alot of food that isn t that great. The salad was the best part of the meal besides the fact it was swimming in liquid.
Good luck and if you go there don t say I didn t warn you :)
I lived in Germany for a few years. The food tasted like i was back there. The amount of food was so much, that my wife and I had enough leftovers for a whole dinner the very next evening. Frank alsohas a nice variety of German beers to choose from. Clean, quaint, affordable , charming and very traditional! Gary and Deonna Fraley... Charleston s.c. hey frank!! The derby was fun by the way.
I want to offer my condolences to Uncle Frank s family, and I didn t know how to do this any other way because I heard that the family promptly left for Germany after his passing. -Anna
The BEST! I L♥ve Uncle Frank's! The prices are fair and the food is out of this world! One of the few rest that still have smoking available too! I eat there as often as possible! He also has gift cards that make for great gifts! The people are extreemly nice, service is great and they always greet you when you come through the door!
It was authentic German food, but was not the best I've had. It was decent and the service was ok, but it really was average. Not much to choose from for sides except spaetzle (yummy), french fries, or home fries. They did have other sides for additional fees, but they did not have German potato salad. You even have to pay for bread seperately. Next time we'll travel further and go to Erika's in Louisville. Much better food and service!
I LOVE Uncle Frank's!
The food is delicious, there is a very wide variety of foods, and if you arent familiar with German food, you can just ask your waiter/waitress, and they will always help you! Frank bakes his own bread, and makes really delicious desserts.
He also catered for a small Oktoberfest party we had, and the Kartoffel salat was soooo good, I still crave it sometimes.
