Mayflower Cafe

Description

An old marquee bearing the familiar name hangs over the corner and shows the way to this long-standing Jackson favorite. Guarded by a pair of grumpy Greek brothers, the requisite long counter with its vinyl spinning stools make this greasy spoon as authentic as they come. Grab your own spoon to ladle generous portions of pork, beef and chicken bathed in thick Southern gravy. Open late by Jackson standards, this is a great choice for those whose business keeps them downtown until late evening.

I cannot believe how outrageous this (restaurant) was. After you get it, the smell is horrible and it looked very old and creepy. No music of course! If you go there, don’t go to restroom before eating because it will close your appetite! It is filthy! I ordered chicken breast, and next thing the waiter said (just to let you know this is not a popular item). Well then take it off if you don’t want to sell it!! I wanted the chicken anyways. She said fries or potatoes, and added (the fries are house made so I don’t recommend them)!! I mean, how unprofessional! She didn’t ask which dressing for salad I wanted, and imposed on me her selection of crappy one. Potato was bitter, and the chicken gave me a stomach ache. The whole meal was tasteless and looked like plastic. Next day I had diarrhea in the morning! Avoid this place at all cost, go to Keifers or Aladdin. Even McDonald's is much better.

I haven't been to Jackson, MS in a long time, but the Mayflower was recommended to us by a local attorney....and we were NOT disappointed!!!!! The service was great, and the food was excellent! We just had lunch specialities, but everything was fresh and tasty. The service we received was exceptional...wish our waitress would relocate to Atlanta!! We will definitely return whenever we have a chance.

Will not be going back! Being a resident of Jackson for 50+ years, have always considered the Mayflower as my favorite restaurant in Jackson until this past weekend. Both my friend and I ordered redfish with crabmeat on top and it was okay, however, we both had to pick out numerous small bones in the redfish and cartlilage in the crabmeat. The baked potato was warm but not hot and the rolls which are usually an asset here seemed to have been from the night before and reheated - way too browned. Our waitress was very friendly, however, we thought a good waitress would never have even put those on the table. We waited until the check came and when asked how the meal was informed her about the rolls and she just blew it off and said she noticed that - the cook seemed to have a problem with turning the oven too high? Both of us agreed, the Mayflower will not be on our next dining out experiences.

My husband and I visited the Mayflower this past weekend (at night) and the karma was like slipping back in time 70 years! Food was delish--we had the "Red Fish Jane". Atmosphere true old-town Jackson with a swanky cafe twist...BYOW (bring your own wine). Service was to die for also---You've got to love the Mayflower,

My husband and I almost always eat dinner at Mayflower before symphony performances, and we enjoy it every time. The menu features Greek and American dishes--including a traditional Greek salad with their "House" dressing (a traditional Southern Comeback dressing that is TO DIE FOR!) Their good seafood dishes include everything from a yummy seafood pasta in cream sauce to Mississippi's ubiquitous fried catfish. The veal cutlets in tomato gravy are also delicious, especially with a side of hand-cut fries. Mayflower is a Jackson landmark, and rightfully so.

I eat at the Mayflower Cafe every time I am in Jackson on business. It is the best eat place in the city. The fish and seafood are always top notch and the cumback sauce is the best I've ever had. The atmoshere only adds to a great experience.

Jerry: Guy & I ate at your restaurant lastnight and it was fabulous!! We had the Lemon fish and it was to die for as well as the Come-back dressing which was the best I have ever tasted! I plans to bring friends to dine there. The waitress was very nice and attentive. Loved it! You have some of the best food in Jackson!! Sherri Steele, Butler's Locksmith Service

I was a Police Officer in Jackson in the late 70's and when you worked downtown, the Mayflower was THE PLACE. The food, the service....everything was ALWAYS THE BEST. If I ever get back to Jackson, the Mayflower will be on my list of places to visit.
