My family and I had lunch at Ajax during the double decker festival. We heard so many great things about Ajax and maybe that was the problem our expectations to high? Well I had the county fried steak, it was cooked very hard and I could barley cut it with a knife my daughter ordered the same and had the same problem. The veggies were good and the mashed potatoes were very good. My husband had a hamburger and the meat tasted off the pattie was a processed burger didn t taste or look like REAL ground beef. The broccoli casserole was very good. The food ok would I go back no the service was good.

Great place It was recommended to us when visiting Ole Miss and it lived up to all the recommendations. Good service and good food. (The crowd tells you its popular). Try anything on their menu.

My boyfriend & I had dinner at Ajax Diner last week & it was the BEST southern cooking we have ever had - and my grandmother could COOK! We each tried one of the pork chop dinners & couldn't decide which was better. The butterbeans, cole slaw, & blackeyed peas were all excellent as well. Chelsea, our waitress, was efficient & friendly. We'll make sure we go back next time we're in MS. GREAT!!!

My boyfriend and I stopped at Ajax on a recent trip through the south. We had read about it online and were excited to try out some real southern food. He ordered the meatloaf and I the catfish plate. The meatloaf was VERY rich, I don't think either of us cared for it. My catfish was probably the best I have ever had, really well seasoned and moist. The squash dish was excellent. I have heard good things about the grits, but I think grits are just something that yankees can't get used to, neither of us liked them. Ajax was worth the stop, the portions are HUGE though, even at lunch, so sharing might be advised.

I was in Oxford in November 2008 and the second day we were there we tried Ajax Diner, we ended up eating there every day we were there. I am from California and have lived in the South in the seventy's. By far Ajax Diner has the best southern food I have ever eaten. On a scale of one to ten this is a ten. If I ever get there again you have my business.

We recently took a day trip to Oxford and really enjoyed it. The meal at Ajax was one of the highlights. The food was reasonably priced and had large portions. The service was fast and friendly. The ambience enjoyable. I got a meat plus two meal - roast beef and gravy as the meat, and I selected fried okra and sweet potato casserole as the sides. All of it was great. It also came with a large slice of jalapeno cornbread, which was one of the best things I've ever tasted. It's also cool just to eat at a restaurant located on Oxford's historic square. I seriously enjoyed it so much that I kind of want to take another day trip to Oxford just so I can eat there again.

Hit or major miss

I've had much better southern food. It's a decent spot for a casual lunch at a good price. The lunch menu offers some nice selections, including the option to choose your own combination of veggies and sides. I like the red beans and rice, sweet potato souffle (very sweet), okra and catfish. It took several visits to realize why Ajax sounded so good but my meal was so bad. The dinner menu is different from the lunch menu. I've never found anything on it that I would even finish, let alone order a second time. The pot roast was gristly and very salty. The meatloaf was bland. Even the mac and cheese was bad. The one "must try" is the fried pickle chips. Salty as all get-out, and you won't want anywhere near as many as they serve, but the first few are great stuff.

Love it or hate it....I HATE IT.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/9/07
I do not understand the draw of AJAX. The service is worse than bad. Their food is not anything like typical Southern fare as the spices and textures are all wrong. This is not yo' momma's cooking by a long shot. And they are not friendly at all; at least not when I've been there. I have given the place several chances, and I have decided that people either are in love with AJAX, or they hate it. I hate it, and won't be back unless I'm accomodating the request of a dining companion. There are other places in Oxford to get a plate lunch where the experience will by much more enjoyable.

Taste of the south
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/16/07
If you are passing through Oxford, you would be a fool to pass up the Ajax Diner. Need I say more than fresh Po Boys, crispy fried okra, melt in your mouth sweet potato and squash casseroles, sweet tea, and chicken and dumplins! Oh yeah, don't forget the catfish and veggie platters, where you can make a plate of all your favorite sides. Charming decor and friendly locals make this place a must.
