This always-popular restaurant has a lot to offerpleasant atmosphere, good service and plenty of old favorites on the menu. Popular items include the hot artichoke dip and the baby back ribs. The grilled fish with rice or baked potato and salad is a well-executed standard. The hamburgers are large and luscious, and the homemade soups and salads make great lunches or starters. Houston's demonstrates what fern bar decor should becomfortable, attractive tables and banquets, good lighting, and enough plants to add life and soften the edges. The atmosphere and the fast, pleasant service are just right for office workers out for lunch and friends meeting for dinner before the movie.
This place should be called Klansmen s instead if Houston s. I see the reviews further down were people love to accuse people of pulling the race card well guess what? I m white and I m pulling the race card. These people are racist! I had a friend who works in there and she told me plenty of stories regarding the black people that come in there. They do not cater to them, period. They have to serve them, otherwise lawsuits, but it was said flat out that they try to make there visit as bad as possible without crossing the line so that they don t come back. And that is from the horse s mouth!! It is a sad day in 2012 when there is still #$%$ like this going on. How is that for a race card!! I d think this would be a great time to use that card!
Is it possible to give no stars? We went once and loved it. Food was excellent, however, we wanted to go back again. In front of us was a man with actual gym clothes on..biking shorts and a t-shirt and gym shoes. My husband had on a nice pair of jeans, a green shirt and a cap. We were headed to our table and a woman stopped us and said no hats in here . We immediately looked at the man with the gym clothes on who was seated no more than three feet away. I started to say something but My husband just walked out calmly. My husband is black by the way. I guess I would say it is no surprise there, that he was singled out like that. And sad part is, he would have taken off his hat once seated. Contrary to belief in this world, black people were taught manners and etiquette as well. We will never eat there again.
To Tigerfan and adala, Memphis is what it is: A VERY RACIST city. Unless you have had the experience of being treated differently because of race, handicap, or any other thing that is different about you then you can't speak to issues concering what it's like to be discriminated against. But until all people stop acting like the color of a person's skin makes it okay to deliver of receive substandard service and hold people accountable for the way they perform in their service oriented low paying jobs this will continue to happen. In case anyone is unclear the color is GREEN and that is all that matters! Money talks...
I was on vacation last weekend.I ordered the Prime rib it was the best I ever had.The service was excellent and the atmosphere was excellent.I asked to speak to the manager his name is Jack Mahoney and he was as good if not better than the whole night.Whenever I go back to Memphis I will definately be going to Houstans again.Thank-you Jack and all the staff for the wonderful time;
A Memphis favorite that is always busy. Food is very good, service is excellent, and the music always relaxing. Best Veggie Burger hands down...get it on the wheat bread. Plus, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap scores high in my book.
The food is delicious and the service is excellent. Although a few occasions the wait staff will ignore you sometimes if you're on the cell phone. Call ahead on weekends or 1and1/2 hr wait at least. I think they judge you on your appearance so if you're black or not dressed up look out
This is my third visit to the Houston Location in Memphis. The other's I've visited are elsewhere and mostly in California. Alittle disappointed with this one in Memphis due to the lack of organization on the weekend or when it's crowded. They really should take reservations for dinner. I avoid it on weekend nights but will try once again before I find another favorite place in Memphis.
houston's is the best restraunt ever my uncle ED STUKENBORG goes there almost every day. there ribs are amazing. so is there fish, burgers, and club sandwhiches. the waiters and waitresses are awesome. especially BRIAN.
This was once the best restaurant in Memphis. The service is still good and the management still tries hard, but 11 years after we first started dining there, the quality of the ingredients, particularly fish and chicken, has tanked. With the exception of the ribs and sometimes the filet, the last few dishes I had there were actually gristly, and the seafood was fishy. Worst of all, the portion sizes keep shrinking while the restaurant chain keeps hiking up the prices. There are just too many quality dining alternatives in Memphis now.
