This local institution brings a little bit of New Orleans to Memphis, serving dishes such as trout amandine, shrimp wrapped in bacon, catfish and bread pudding. It also offers a selection of steaks and chicken dishes. Desserts, including the bread pudding, are well done here, too. Many people come back again and again for the kahlua or the Granny Smith apple pies. Mortimer's looks the way restaurants looked in your childhood, decked out in what might be called comfort decor, which matches the comfort food it serves. Memphians are continuing the tradition by bringing their older children here, but over the years the dress has become more casual.
My husband and I love this place. The food is really good and the prices are reasonable. The service is friendly and everyone just seems to be good people in there. The owner, Sara Stewart, has come to know us, being as we are in there every Friday night. She always recognizes us and speaks to us. We prefer going to places like Mortimer's instead of a place like Chili's. If no one goes to these small places, all we will have left is On the Borders, Chili's, and Applebees! The food is prepared fresh and is so much better than any of those places. Everything we have had is great from the sandwiches and salads to the filets. Everyone should check it out!
Absolutely the worst dining experience in my 24 years in Memphis ... Sunday evening must be the night of nothing cooked fresh ... from soup to main course it all tasted like leftovers and cold to boot! Will never go back despite George L's glowing reviews. Too bad ... like George, but not his restaurant recommendation.
What I dislike about Mortimer's was the fireplace location. When you first walk in you are hit in the face with cigarette smoke which is definitely a turnoff since I do not smoke.
What I liked about Mortimers was the stuffed crab dish. I can't remember to correct name but it was awesome. Unfortunately it is only a seasonal dish so our second trip the option wasn't available.
Try Mortimer's for its seafood dishes, sandwiches, and desserts (don't miss the bread pudding or frozen pecan ball). Services and prices aren't so hot, but the cozy, clubby atmosphere can't be beat during winter.
My fiance and I recently ate at Mortimer's for the first time, even though he has lived in Memphis all his life. We will definitely be going back, as a matter of fact, tonight! Great menu selection, delicious and tasty food, fried foods have the perfect breading, pricing compares to that of Outback, Red Lobster, etc. Oh yeah...AWESOME onion rings!!! Dress up or dress down you'll fit right in with the regulars or the first timers.
I've lived in the neighborhood all my life and actually forget it is there. I finally did check it out and in my opinion it is overpriced for the small portions served. A side of slaw is a tiny take out sized container. The baked potato was nice sized, and you get 5 shrimp. The only vegetable I saw on the menu was green beans. I was not in the least impressed and will not be returning.
i eat here about 4 times a year and in the last decade only one time have i not been a 4 star happy customer. especially the steaks. very good. service usually good to very good. GO, GO, GO. db and i live in memphis
the worst dining experience in a while...took out of town guests...horrible service and food was not much better...sadly will not being going back..band playing was the highlight of the night...they need some serious help...and fresh food(real CRAB not krab as stated on menu)
