Blues City Cafe

Description

The atmosphere at this diner-style cafe is so authentic that the place was used virtually unchanged in "The Firm", the Tom Cruise movie about a Memphis law firm. Bill Clinton is also fond of the Blues City Cafe. The decor is intentionally weathered, with corrugated iron and glass blocks. Diner-style seating offers a great view of the crowds on Beale. The best bet on the menu is that Memphis staplebarbeque. You can watch big slabs of ribs being turned on the grill while you drink a cold beer. The prices are slightly elevated because of the restaurant's historic location, but you can still eat for a reasonable price.

Went to blues cafe looking for good ribs in Memphis (was disappointed by the dry ones at Rendezvous). Was very satisfied. Got the "best meal" special with moist, tender ribs with a semi-sweet glaze. Comes with catfish (deep fried but not greasy at all), steak-cut fries (a bit soggy), porknbeans, coleslaw (very good-sweet), and unremarkable toast. Service was way fast... Walked in on a busy night, got seated in seconds, ordered and was eating ribs in 7 minutes- no kidding! Waiter was very professional and recommended the apple dumplings dessert which came in a sizzling frypan with a scoop of vanilla. Delicious.

We were in Memphis and wanted some local food. Went to Blues City Cafe and it was great. The ribs were tender and meaty. Just fell off the bone. Pries were reasonable as well.

I just completed my dining experience at Blues City Cafe and it was not impressive at all. The ribs looked like they came off of an oversized sow. They were tough and had no sauce to speak of. All of the hype about this cafe is way overrated. I asked for a piece of bread and never got it. I will be glad to be leaving Memphis because the food where I come from is much better.

The food was great! The atmosphere and the waitress weren't amazing, but the food made up for it.

Elvis and Pickles -
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/19/08
Make up a great day! We visited with Elvis and received the recommendation to eat at the Bules City Cafe. It was very nice. We enjoyed the fried pickles very much. The rest of the food was great too.

We had a great time at Blue City Cafe. It has amazing southern BBQ and they even had homemade tamales! Their portions are huge. It is also in a great location, Beale Street.

The good: The best ribs I have ever eaten, reasonable prices. The bad: It basically has the decor of a diner, and it gets a lot of traffic from the Beale Street tourists, so it could be cleaner. The ribs, however, are a must-try item.
