Automatic Slim's Tonga Club
Expect hip decor and great food at this restaurant, which serves up tasty Caribbean and Southwestern dishes. Sit at the bar and have one of the many flavors of martinis. The best seats, though, are by the window (with a view of the Peabody ) and on the mezzanine. As for the food, the Voodoo Stew is a standout, with big chunks of seafood in a lusty sauce. Other specialties include the Coyote Chipspotato chips with a red pepper sauceas well as the Coconut Mango Shrimp and the various polenta dishes. The lunch menu features large sandwiches such as salmon on sourdough bread.
It came with such good reviews that we were excited to try it. The food was very good, if entirely too pretentious, but was not accurately described. The chicken and mango salad had neither mangoes nor the peanuts that were supposed to be in the dish. We ordered cocktails that were virtually alcohol-free; at $7.75 each, that was a major disappointment. The coconut shrimp appetizer was terribly greasy. Overall, not worth the money at all.
I am a native Memphian and this is my restaurant of choice. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and the food is fabulous! My favorite is the lamb. You have to get one of their fresh fruit martini's. They always have a huge jug filled with vodka soaked fresh fruit that the martini's are made out of. They are wonderful. The service is always great! This place is perfect for a night out to dinner or drinks with friends or a special dinner!
This is my favorite place to eat downtown. Great food across the whole menu, with interesting combinations of spices and sweet seasonings. It generally has capable and friendly service, and I love the atmosphere.
For my money, the BLTA & BBQ shrimp sandwich off the lunch menu is the best (and best value, it can make 2 small meals) sandwich to be found in Memphis.
We have been to Automatic Slim's three or four times. The first time we were very impressed with the food and the service was reasonable. Our most recent visit will most definitely be the last. The service was appalling. There were two members of the waitstaff, both of whom served us, but they were extremely busy and the restaurant was clearly understaffed. The waiter in particular was both inattentive and downright rude. He made several mistakes with our order, and failed to bring us water on a couple of occasions. When he asked us how the food was, he did not wait for an answer but merely walked away. Our request for the bill was also repeatedly ignored. Also the red snapper was extremely overcooked and very dry. Do yourself a favor and head to The Beauty Shop instead.
My husband and I chose Automatic Slim’s for our 3 year anniversary dinner. We always try and pick a place we haven’t been before. I was excited about going after looking at the menu on there website. We had the best time the food, service and atmosphere was great. I have been raving to all my friends about it we will definitely go back.
LOVE this place! The food is so creative and the flavors are such a nice change from the ho hum blandness or generic spices that other restaurants use. This is a great place for lunch or dinner or hanging out at the bar. I don't know why you would not take someone here on a date - to each their own, I guess. The atmosphere ties everything in together. Don't skip dessert either!
Slim's has been fabulous in the past. It used to be one of our office bunch's two favorite spots.
The new owners have the same menu, but are not using the same recipes, and most of the new recipes don't have the zing that Cindy added to her dishes. I hope they get their act together soon...and I hope the downtown folks give them a chance to get their act together. Most of the folks at our table don't plan to go back.
Guys, get yourselves some jerk spice and some cayenne, put one or the other in just about everything (including the butter for the muffins), and upgrade your ingredients.
