Shogun Japanese Steakhouse
This American style Japanese restaurant features the communal teppanyaki grill, where the chef makes jokes and demonstrates remarkable dexterity with the cutlery. At Shogun, the filet mignon, salmon, and scallops are stand outs. Teppanyaki dinners come with a shrimp appetizer, small salad, fried rice, and two excellent dipping sauces. Additional menu items include an outstanding miso soup, tempura and sushi. You can sit at the teppanyaki, choose a quiet room for other choices from the menu or sit at the sushi bar. Dress code is casual.
Over the years we ate here several times ... without any problems or complaints. Recently in, February of 2013, we decided to meet friends here for dinner. This...by far ... was the worst experience I have had at a local restaurant in Memphis in years. The service was terrible, bathrooms were unkept with trash and toilet paper all over the floors...a gas station restroom has more upkeep than this. After being seated for 25min along with 10 other guests at the table, not one drink had been served ... everyone collectively started to voice their opinions to each other about how bad their previous experiences at Shogun had been. The service here has steadily degraded over the past few years as everyone else agreed. We had enough and just decided to leave.. I will never recommend eating here to anyone ever again. I m really dissapointed to see it happen and can only blame the management for not handling obvious problems.
My wife and I must stop here everytime we come to Memphis. The food is excellent for the price and the service is always friendly. I really enjoy the laid back atmosphere for dining after a day of shopping or golf. The food is GREAT!
I'd never seen a dirty Japanese restaurant until I came here. The service was slow. They sat us in the section where they cook the food in front of you, then were annoyed with us when we wanted sushi. (How were we to know there were two separate sections?) I went one more time to celebrate a colleagues birthday and it took more than twenty minutes (at lunchtime!) before anyone even spoke to us. A disappointment.
It has been a sort of family thing now to eat at Shogun for birthdays and graduations so I'm sort of bias. I really enjoy the enviroment and service so if you want to enjoy a taste of Japan give it a try.
Hey, this ain't the best sushi in Memphis, but it beats the only other to choose from. If I had my preference, I'd go to Do on S. Cooper, or Sakura in Jackson, TN. Now that's some fine sushi, Joy and Steve.
