Back Inn Cafe
Providing an exceptional view of the Tennessee River, this fine establishment is a treat for the eyes as well as the palate. The experience is a culinary bistro delight with a definite Italian flair. A perfect example is the Cioppino, a wondrous blend of salmon, shrimp, calamari, mussels and tomatoes perfectly seasoned with saffron and served with freshly made risotto. This, as well as an impressive assortment of wine and beer, makes it a fabulous choice for any special occasion.
I endured such a discriminatory experience at Back Inn Café in Chattanooga’s Bluff View Art District that I feel compelled to share with others. My husband and I were very excited to go out for a nice dinner in an upscale establishment for our anniversary. We arrived at our reservation time and were ignored for a few minutes while the hostess made notes in their reservation book. After running upstairs and acting very flustered, she explained that our table was still occupied, and she could seat us in the parlor where a fireplace would be lit for us while we waited. We walked through a restaurant that was at least half empty, and were left waiting, without a lit fireplace for 25 minutes before deciding it was time to leave. The hostess met us on our way out and said that she would rearrange some tables and get us a seat at that time. We were seated, and as she left, a lady who had arrived behind us was being served her dinner! At this time, we decided it was a good idea to leave. As we were leaving, I stopped to speak with the hostess about why we were leaving. I expressed my displeasure at being made to wait half an hour beyond our reservation time for a table when the restaurant was half empty. The manager then began to talk to me. The explanation offered was that each table was reserved, not a time. I said, I could understand that, but do you really keep guests waiting a half hour when your restaurant is half empty? The manager’s reply was, “It’s not like we were trying to not serve you in our establishment.” Actually, that thought had not crossed my mind until he said it, but we are a younger couple (in our early 30’s) with visible tattoos. Suddenly this resonated with me as the real reason for us being pushed around and passed up for our reservation, rather than a careless hostess.
What can I say, Staying at the Thompson house at the Bluff View Inn was worth the food and atmosphere. The view was great, and the food was amazing! Went for our fourth anniversary for the first time and will go back!
My husband had the Espresso rubbed steak and I had the stuffed roasted chicken, and it was worth every penny. The waiter was great and enjoyed ourselves beyond words. The Bluff Island Breeze drink was great!!!!
If you want to hold an event at the Back Inn Cafe don't bother, they don't respond to the online inquiry form, nor direct emails. I did not realize that the economy was so good that they are able to turn away business. Too bad for you, will have our wedding elsewhere.
This restaurant's food was fabulous and the service was very good as well. This is where my husband proposed to me so it has a lot of sentimental value. I love it and am looking forward to my next visit.
The Back Inn Cafe provides a quiet little place to disappear for a while. Sit out on the terrace and enjoy the beautiful view of the Tennessee River and Veteran's Street Bridge, lounge in the sitting room and read a paper, or enjoy one of the cozy little dining areas for a resite from the heat and a relaxing ambience.
I've taken most of my out-of-town friends to the Back Inn Cafe. It nevers fails to impress. The service staff are cordial, helpful without being effusive. The food quality, the freshness, the presentation have a European flair. The atmosphere? Oh, just go! Beautiful hardwood floors, soft, eclectic lighting, fireplace, it's a restaurant you need to put on your list as one of Chattanooga's best.
Dislike? The menu is limited - but perhaps this is the reason for the quality and freshness. I would only add a better selection for vegetarians (but then I am one so would definitely be baised towards this option.)
Go. Enjoy and let me know if you don't feel the same.
My family and I enjoyed a great late lunch. We would love to go back again in the future.

We of course loved the view of the TN River. We had a great waiter. The herb/cheese bread was fantastic. All 4 of us had a different lunch and we all loved it.
The peanut butter pie is the best I have ever had.
