My wife and I stopped by Whitt's on a trip to Nashville and were disappointed. The Barbecue was bland, the beans tasted like out of a can, but the coleslaw was not bad. While the help seemed nice, the old man that ran the place was a definite turn-off. My wife and I will avoid this stop in the future.
Okay so I'm a native of Nashville and grew up with this stuff but I never stopped loving Whitt's BBQ. I'm not a fan of ribs (I'm not from Memphis afterall), just the good ole' pulled pork. The coleslaw at Whitt's isn't creamy it's tangy and I could eat it by the bucket load. But I prefer a dollop on a BBQ sandwich. By the time I put on my requisite amout of Whitt's vinegar based sauce I of course can hardly pick up the sandwich for it falling apart. I moved to NC about a decade ago and on a trip towards the Outer Banks I found Smithfield's BBQ. And that's when I discovered that the BBQ I loved so much in Nashville wasn't Tennessee BBQ afterall - but almost exactly like Eastern NC style. Who knew? Unfortunately I live in Western NC so I'm betwixt and between my favorite BBQ places. So if you're near Whitt's stop by and tell them I miss them!
This restaurant has received the best of Nashville award for barbecue more than once. Apparently, people in Nashville are retarded. If you took this garbage down the road to Memphis, they would laugh you out of town. The food is simply lacking in any semblance of flavor. I hate to trash a place like this that has been around forever, but I have to believe that the clientelle return out of force of bad habit. The service is fine, and the folks are friendly, but the ribs taste boiled, with no hint of smoke or seasoning: unacceptable. The baked beans were obviously from a can straight off a Sysco truck without even a thought of a dash of salt and pepper. The cole slaw was boring me to the point of tears. The one highlight was the sweet tea. It was pretty darn good. The tea is not enough of an excuse to return though.
