Mary's Place is a great seafood restaurant with the ambiance of good places to enjoy seafood, wild and caught fresh from Gulf waters, unique to the coastline. Following attempts and failures by two who thought they could operate a seafood restaurant, Betty and Shirley are back running the operation. If you want foreign pond-raised seafood go to a chain restaurant, but if you're looking for the best seafood from the Gulf of Mexico waters, Mary's Place is a must. We were served rotten foul smelling shrimp after we had eaten a whole appetizer full of the same shrimp and the kids had eaten half of there fried shrimp.They did remove the 13.95 meal but not the 21.95 meal and the manager never offered an apology for that,however he did say he was sorry we had to wait an hour and a half for the fish to show up.Eat at your own risk here because if you have a complaint the manager will not take your phone calls and remember we had to leave our vacation two days early and drive 5 hours home with everybody in the car suffering from nausea,stomach aches and diarrhea.Thanks Mary's place for the 45 dollar bill and the experience my kids will always remember.

i have been going to this place for over 40 yrs, even though the ownership has changed my wife and myself along withmy brother and his wife still enjoy the food and the people there. very friendly along with very easy on the eyes staff.music on friday night was good and there are no cats unless they cooked them all. i find it very clean every time we visit, i live about as close to the casinos but for my money marys is the best. So bad that before we left the parking lot we placed a complaint with the Health Deptartment and contacted Bellingrath Gardens to encourage them to remove this establishment from their local favorite list. Should have left the restaurant based on first impression. It is dark, dingy, and not clean. It smells terrible!! Then it goes on from there -- took one bite of my cottage cheese; it was rotten! Told our waitress and she acted like I was crazy. I don't think the cottage cheese was ever removed. Thank the Lord I was the only one that had taken cottage cheese. The bad news is the ranch dressing was rancid as well. I ordered the seafood platter, which comes with hushpuppies -- rancid rotten hushpuppies. I picked one of them up,split it in half, and went to take a bite when the aroma of the rotten batter about knocked me over. Eat at your own risk is all I have to say.

I have been to Mary's every week for the past 5 years and have never seen any cats or signs about cats in or outside of the restaurant. I think that the food is great! There are also new owners so the inside and outside have been cleaned up A LOT!!!

The fond memories fade. The year was 1973. Old Mary, herself, used to sit on a wooden chair just outside the kitchen door. A large portrait of FDR was displayed proudly behind the bar. The menu in those days was simple: the seafood platter or the chicken platter. I don't remember the quality, but it wasn't about that. Jim Loomis, a yankee, once stationed in the heart of the confederacy.

We went to Mary's Place and would never recommend it to anyone else. We tried their buffet since they pushed it and claimed that was what they were famous for. The gumbo was cold and disgusting, the fried shrimp and fish were average at best. The waitress noticed my wife was trying their boiled shrimp, at which she actually volunteered it was old and not very good. That was about the only service that was worth mentioning from the staff. The selection was very limited, maybe what you would expect of a seafood buffet far away from the coast instead of something right on the coast. Vegetables, salad, and dessert were clearly an afterthought -- they seemed to just believe fried shrimp and fish and oysters and chicken was enough. It was the worst restaurant we went to on this trip to Dauphin Island by far -- Barnacle Bill's was better and doesn't claim to be very good, and we would highly recommend Pelican Reef which was only 15 minutes north of Dauphin Island.
