This is a review from a 1985 visit to Top O the River when I was a lonely GI (from California) at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. On my first weekend pass I ventured out into town and wanted to try some real Southern cuisine. Well, my sergeant recommended this place Top O the River just outside the gates of the post, and, man, 25 years later, I still think about that great meal! I just remember that I ordered a bit of everything on the menu.... catfish, chicken, corn, greens, hush puppies... and it was all outstanding and different from any other regional food I had ever tasted. The catfish was so tasty, and it became the standard by which I judged all catfish thereafter. The service also was top-notch, warm and hospitable, as it usually was around town for us soldiers (who supported the local economy). Top O the River was my first real "taste" of the deep South and it greatly contributed to my fond memories and impressions of Alabama.
