CF Penns is truly a landmark in the Decatur area. You either love their burgers or hate them. They are not 100% beef, mixed with bread and fried. They care certainly not for the calorie counters:-) They have a unique taste all their own. I love them, I grew up eating them...I like mine with ketchup and onions. My kids hate them and will not even entertain the thought of eating a Penns burger:-) Their loss...LOL
As you can see, everyone either loves or hates these burgers. They are an institution. They became popular during the Great Depression. They are not 100% meat. They contain a filler. Some people call this type of burger a slugburger or a breadburger. (Slugburger is because they used to cost a nickel & nickels were called slugs. Breadburger is from the filler.) They are sort of a deep-fried mini-meatloaf without tomato sauce. I know that doesn't sound very appetizing, but they are AWESOME!!! I don't like them until I sprinkle a little salt on them & then they are AMAZING!!! I also recommend extra mustard & onion on them. You can get them with or without cheese & single or double. Most folks know what they want when they walk in, but if you don't, just tell them that you need a minute or that it's your first time & need help. They are willing to help if asked, even when they are busy. Eat one & enjoy!!!
i am for the most, not a critic. when it comes to the food i get in any place i feel i can be a critic. i visited penns once and only once, will never be back again. first the waiters are very demanding. like when you walk in the door they want your order then and there. i didnt even get sat down and was asked what i wanted. well i had never been in the place and would like a menu.. oh no.. they only do burgers one way and thats it. well ok i got past that and decided to order a burger...omg .. from the first bite i thought i would puke. i couldnt get the bite to go down and in public no where to put it. so i retrieved it in a napkin.. quitely wrapped what was left of burger cept one bite, and got up and left .. i threw the remains in the outside trash quick .. it was horrible.. i dont care if this is a decatur icon place to eat..
CF Penns is an institution and tradition that's now rarely, and sadly, found in the US anymore. It's the type of place that used to be found along Route 66. It's a strong part of Decatur's vast and interesting past. The taste is fantastic, but it's more than that. it's a place that Elvis used to park his bus outside of town and send someone in to get Penn's burgers. The place has that kind of history. It's the kind of place you'll find in 'off the beaten path' books. We need to find that America again and support institutions like Penn's. Long Live Penn's!!!
People; You have got to support this institution in Decatur. They may close because of a drop in business. We grew up eating these burgers. They had one in Hartselle also and one of those greasy burgers with a glass Moutain Dew bottle was the best ever. Please don't let them close. It would be a shame to let this place go. We loved to make fun of the burgers but I have to have one when I am in town.
I was born and raised in Decatur, and I never could get
past the smell of the burgers, never mind the sub-standard
taste. Better off spending your money & time at Krystal's. Although
my grandparents loved them very much.
I grew up eating these little ''guys'' nothing like a DEEP FRIED burger to get you off and running. Its really hard to explain the taste and flavor, only those who have been here can explain it. I would say SONIC is somewhat close to the flavor. they are sold with ONIONS and MUSTARD only , but you can have them add cheese and ketchup if you please. I now live in Colorado and my sister alwasy teases me about having one when she is in there area of the place.... I would not recommend eating here alot due to the way ppl look now at fried foods, but MAN OH MAN do these guys taste awsome as hell. On another note if your in the area and want to try REAL SOUTHERN BBQ , look up BIG BOB GIBSONS right off 6 th avenue. he has won many many times at the MEMPHIS IN MAY FESTIVAL. Which if your local BBQ place has never won there THAN IT AIN'T REALL BBQ..... Its not about tons of BBQ SAUCE its all about the meat.....
Penn Hamburgers are the absolute BEST!!!! Everytime I go to Decatur it is a must that I pay a visit to Penns. I have to order a couple for now and a few for the road. Please don't ever change,we love you the way you are!!!
