Nabeel's Cafe & Market
Located on Oxmoor Road in Homewood, Nabeel's offers a full range of Greek repasts along with an adjoining store stocked with Mediterranean groceries. The decor is very cozy and very Greek, furnished with antique-looking Mediterranean furniture and decorative ceramics. The tables are candlelit, and the lighting is soft. The interesting menu tapers upward from a massive array of salads, soups, and Greek appetizers, to a much smaller selection of main-course meat dishes including John's Steak, Shrimp Aegean and Chicken Skewers.
Food was marginal...not at all what was expected. The guy running the place was poor...used poor languange in front of my six year old. Gyro was dry and grainy and flaffel was dry. Muffelettas were a sad excuse for such. This was once a fabulous place to get authentic greek food....there is much competition now and this food was unacceptable. The only shining moment was the baklava.
I know that Nabeels is a holy icon in this area, but it IS a hit or miss proposition -- I had COLD moussaka - I mean COLD. We had virtually no service -- I thought we must have become invisible. The folks sitting next to us never got their salads and bread. Let me note that we got there early on a weekend night and still had lousy service. And no, I am not a competitor nor an unhappy employee nor have I an agenda other than to tell the truth. The Krontiras seem to think that anyone disappointed in Nabeels is part of an organized conspiracy. Hey, just give me some warm dinner, that's all.
Loved it! Great atmosphere, great service, and the food was awesome. This was our first stop on a whirlwind 2 week trek accross the country and couldn't think of a better place to have our first meal. We had barely finished our appetizer when the entees came and the waitress apologized for it taking so long! We arrived too late to check out the maket, it was closed by the time we finished our meal, so we will definitly be making a return trip next time we are in the area. We love local independant establishments and Nabeel's was an outstanding find!
My wife and I love Nabeels. We ate there many times when we lived in B'ham. Now that we live in Tennessee, we travel to Nabeels once a year as a treat. As a matter of fact we are going there this weekend to enjoy great food and a wonderful atmosphere!
Are you people crazy? This restaurant is filthy and dusty! The food is the worst I have ever had! The employees are a bunch of teens who talk dirty in earshot of the customers! My pita bread was moldy!
I have been going to this place for years now. The service and atmosphere are both great. I love it so much that I had my engagement party there. This too, was wonderful. If you are in Homewood you must stop by this place.
A good value meal like your grandma would make... if she were Greek. And if you didn't leave enough room for dessert, get the baklava to go! Visit the adjoining market and buy some treats that you won't find in your average supermarket.
