Pete's Famous Hot Dogs

Description

The aged neon sign above the door proclaims "Established 1920," but Pete's actually opened its doors in 1915, while the present proprietor has been here since 1948.Pete's is said to be the narrowest restaurant in Birmingham. At lunchtime, regulars line up out the door for a Pete's hot dog with everything on it. Wash it down with a Grapico or a cold bottle of your favorite soda.

One of the truly great icons of the Southern chili dog, and has been in business since 1920.And like many Southern chili dog joints, it is a complete hole-in-the-wall in downtown Birmingham. As with all classic Southern dogs, the chili is thick and meaty, not as spicy as some in keeping with the Greek influence so common in Southern chili. Get it loaded, the chili stands up to the chili. On the day I ate my hot dog lunch here, I ate dinner at Dreamland BB Ribs - now that was a pretty good day, worthy of being a Groundhog Day.

When I was a senior at Phillips High School, we would catch the bus in front of Pete's. The hotdogs were ridiculously good. I am in Michigan now, but I visit Pete's whenever I am home.

Pete's Famous Hot Dogs is one of a kind.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/14/09
Having eaten hot dogs from Orlando to Seattle, I can say this without reservation--Pete's Famous are the best hot dogs I have eaten. Gus (the owner) is quite the character. I have to drive over seventy miles to eat there, but I make the trek at least every couple of months. The last time I was there, I told Gus that I did not come there for the 'dogs, but for his charming personality. He looked at me for a moment, then said, "You're just a smart_ss." That tells you everything you need to know about Gus and Pete's Famous Hot Dogs.

Pete's Famous hot dogs

Whenever I make it to Birmingham, I try to go by Pete's. They truely have the best hot dogs I have ever eaten. When I was dating my now husband, we would swing by Pete's for a snack. I highly recommend Pete's for anyone who enjoys hot dogs.

My wife and I drove down from Huntsville to check Pete's out and to visit Oak Mountain State Park. We both must admit that we were surprised when we arrived there. There is barely enough room to slide through the door when there are more than a couple customers present. There is no place to sit down. You order your meal and eat it and, when you are ready, you pay. I thought it was unusual until I found it it hard to stop at one hot dog. Why pay early when you don't know how many you are going to end up eating. Hey, this place is definitely a hot dog stand to visit when in Birmingham, AL. Great tasting dogs at a very reasonable price. I suppose this will have to be a "must return to" place when we are in Birmingham.

I travel the U.S. I have never eaten a better hot dog. My father took me to Pete's in 1952. Gus is one more character and God Bless Kathy.

Yes, it's a hole-in-the-wall. Yes, it's crowded. Yes, they're the best dogs you'll ever wrap your gums around. Pete's might be a little inconvenient if you don't have business downtown, but heck--what's a little inconvenience for the best hotdog ever??? This isn't a place to take somebody you want to impress, unless they're impressed by great hotdogs

I worked in Bham for years, southside, we picked up lunch in a stretch limo. Pete's Famous was on the menu at least weekly. They are absolutely heavenly! You cannot get a better hot dog anywhere!!!! Turbo5
