Veranda on Highland
Veranda on Highland was built in 1908 and was formerly known as the Merritt House. The architecture has evolved from Victorian Queen Anne style to a modern conversion with exterior modifications and outdoor dining areas. In December 2006, the Veranda opened its doors to diners for the first time. The executive chef at Veranda on Highland, Chef Hansell, grew up in Mississippi and graduated from the Culinary School at the University of Southern Mississippi. Chef Hansell's menu is inspired by indigenous ingredients from local farms, purveyors, and artisans. For an exclusive dining experience, the Veranda Supper Club allows diners to be treated with a four-course-meal prepared by Executive Chef Jeffrey Hansell with local beers, locally grown food and international wines. The food and service was absolutely excellent. It reminded me of dining in New Orleans with the attention to detail.
My wife had the scallops and she loved them. I had the fish of the day, which was Redfish and they were both done perfectly.
This is the second time we have eaten here and it is quickly becoming our favorite. A friend has eaten the Sunday brunch numerous times and says it is second to none in Birmingham.
I had been to the Veranda a year or so ago and had a middle of the road experience. I recently went back and was astonished at how amazing the food was. I asked, and found out a new chef from New Orleans had come in and taken over the kitchen. A few minutes later Chef Robey came out and was very gracious. I've been back twice since then and each time I'm amazed at how every single dish that kitchen puts out is superb. This place now has to rank right up there with Highland's and Bottega as one of the absolute best restaurants in Birmingham.
The first thing that amazed me about the Veranda was the ambiance and the great service. Waiters and all staff personnel were prompt, particular, and offered great service. The menu was extensive, and the food was tasty. Being a fine dining restaurant, however, the food was not overpriced. The chef actually came out after our meal and asked us how it was. I tasted several dishes at my table from the shrimp and grits to a pork dish and a filet minion. All dishes offered such a variety of flavor that one was forced to eat slowly just to savor each bite. The restaurant offers a phenomenal and fresh seafood selection, as well as choice meats and amazing deserts. Also, check out the wine and drink menu for a dazzling selection that will be sure to suit your tastes. Whether a nice dinner for two or a large party, this restaurant is sure to suit your needs. I am excited about their brunch coming up as well!
From the moment we turned over our keys to the valet, to the time we we settled back in our vehicle, our entire experience was thoroughly enjoyable. T-Bone, the waiter was professional, entertaining, and knowledgable. Darrel, the head chef, came out and visited. Literally everything we ate - from the bouillabaisse (best I have ever tried), the soft shell crawfish, a sample of salads, the grouper, and the granny smith apple desert - as well as the wine T-bone recommended were all top notch. The atmosphere was private enough for easy conversation, and comfortable enough to feel at home. Birmingham has many excellent restaurants, but the overall experience at the Veranda was our favorite of all the restaurants in Birmingham.
Exceptional, eclectic, and classic! The menu reflecs deep South meets West American, Asian fusion! A killer combonation of classic elegance and contemporary endulgence for the pallet. Good balance between portions, quality, and price. The sevice was second to none.
