Steak -n Shake is one of my favorite places to eat.
The one in Wildwood, well sometimes the food and service is good and sometimes not. Once the beans in the chili were hard and crunchy. Once the chili was so salty you couldn't eat it. Once it was too greasy. There are times when the food is sooo good. It's the only one in my neighborhood so I gotta take a chance.
Great place to dine. Hamburgers, spaghetti, chili, shakes, etc. They cook to order so it is really restaurant style. No hour old hamburgers will be handed to you in a moments notice therefore you must allow for this extra time if you do the drive-thru.
After making a run through the McDonald's drive-thru for my daughter's chicken nugget Happy Meal, my wife and son prevailed upon me to get them something at the Steak'n'Shake across the street instead. There were only 3 cars ahead of us in the drive-thru (each of which had already ordered) yet we had to wait about 4-5 minutes to place our order. Then we had to wait 15 more minutes to get the food. 20 minutes at a drive-thru is a schedule-buster! In that time we could have gotten a real steak someplace else to go or gone inside to use the bathroom or driven another 25 miles up I-75 on our 420 mile journey home.
My chief complaint is that the drive-through is built so that one cannot escape from it! Otherwise I would have simply driven off and never written this review.
To make matters worse worse, my steakburger bun was hard as a brick when it arrived. I finally asked to speak to the manager when the drive-through employee was unmoved to extend any sympathy about the poor service and food. The manager (to his professional credit) did try to make amends and offered me a refund on the steakburger and a replacement all the while he was busy trying to make shakes himself. However, he informed me that the average wait is 5-7 minutes per car at a Steak'n'Shake drive-thru! Whether true or not, I will be avoiding this particular Steak'n'Shake when traveling the interestate unless I have a few hours to kill for a carton of soggy fries and hard bun. Other Steak'n'Shakes have not had similar service so my comments are not directed at the entire chain, only based upon my experience on this particular visit. The cook to order policy cannot be the cause due to experience at other locations.
