Where do I begin? My Family and I traveled to Brooksville over the weekend to visit Rogers Christmas house. On the way up Hwy 50 we passed the BBQ restaurant. I suggested we stop there since it looked clean and looked family owned. When traveling through out Florida (we average 300+ miles of travel per weekend) we like to stop off at the local mom & pop restaurants since they tend to have the best food and best service.
That theory was put to the test with Deep South Family BBQ. When we arrived we were the only guests in the house. We went to the order window and were greeted by an older man who took our order.
I was first, ordering the BBQ brisket. My wife followed by ordering meals for our twin sons. One ordered a grilled cheese sandwich at which time the man behind the counter shook his head and rolled his eyes. My other son wanted the meatloaf sandwich and the man behind the counter shook his head again. My wife ordered the kielbasa and the man behind the counter slammed his pen and pad down and told my wife that she was being ridiculous, that this is a BBQ restaurant and that we should be there to eat BBQ. He went on to say how the kielbasa was the cheapest stuff they could find at Wal-Mart and she would be much better off ordering BBQ. My wife asked about the sliced chicken and he said now that’s better.
The whole time I was watching this guy with his head shaking and eye rolling. I was getting pretty upset. Thankfully when I went to pay with my Visa Debit Card he told me that they accept CASH ONLY. My wife, not knowing of his head shaking attitude asked where the nearest ATM was. He told us it was at the Hess station up the road. I swiftly headed out the door and explained to my wife this guy was a total jerk and I was thankful they didn’t take Visa as I didn’t want to contribute one dime to his success.
I have never in my life and my tens of thousands of dollars of dining out been so rudely treated by what appeared to be the owner of this restaurant. To top it off I have never been told by anyone that something on their menu is the cheapest they can find and suggest not to order it.
I truly believe this guy simply didn’t want to cook our order. I will NEVER return to this place and I will make my experience known.
If you don't want to cook the items on the menu THEN DONT OFFER THEM!!
The food was exactly what I was hoping for, great southern style food, the atmosphere was family friendly and kind of whimsical. It is nestled nicely under some large shady oak trees and has a playground for the young ones. I will probably stop in there any time I am in that area.
The finest BBQ in Florida. Awesome place the owner is an awesome host. Plus is a huge Gator fan does not hurt.
