Every time we visit a nearby town we always drive the few extra miles to Crystal River to eat at Charlies. Their Lobster Bisque is to die for, great fried oysters and oyster stew, and, when in season, their soft shell crabs are delicious. Good size helpings and excellent value for the money. Great water views.
Been there several times and the food would be OK if they new how to cook it. Food overcooked, scallops cooked till tough and small attachment mussel not removed from scallops. Some things OK but overpriced for mediocre food.
Charlies has been consistently the best value in seafood in Crystal River. You can have a good seafood meal without breaking the bank. It is operated by folks in the seafood fishing business. You can get fresh mullet here which is not, to my knowledge, available any where else in town.
I've been eating there off and on for 8 years and it's been very consistently Average. The staff has always been friendly and the view is great if you get a seat in the back looking over the docks.
Worth going to, but don't expect anything spectacular.
I set out looking for a restaurant that served FRESH fish, I found a restaurant that exceeded my expectations. From the friendly service to the amazing seafood, it is certainly worth a visit.
Being a Florida girl, the first thing I always order is sweet tea. That in itself tells quite a bit about a place. It was just right - not too sweet. The gumbo that arrived next was wonderful. Obviously homemade. The blue cheese dressing on the salad was also homemade and did not disappoint. I couldn't decide on the main entree so I went with the seafood platter. As the saying goes, any fresher and it would still be swimming. The platter is certainly large enough to share. I overheard the waitress telling the next table about the Key Lime pie and I couldn't resist. Outstanding! Charlie's is now on my list of establishments that I will try to frequent more in the future.
There's really not much of an atmosphere other than people enjoying great food and pelicans on the water. The food is wonderful and the prices definitely won't break the bank. They also have a decent selection for the kids in case that's an issue. Everyone is always friendly; I've been going there for years and it's always wonderful.
